From planning to the final results, there are many details I'd love to share about this Zenless Zone Zero Nangong Yu cosplay shoot featuring the Rhapsody Muse skin theme.
The color scheme of the Rhapsody Muse outfit is very distinct. The pink and black split-color pigtail wig really tests the stylist's skill—it needs to ensure a natural pink gradient at the ends while maintaining a voluminous, tsundere curvature for the pigtails. The white and pink animal ears and hair clips on top are playful highlights that balance out the heaviness of the dominant black outfit. The sailor collar and large pink bow are iconic elements, complemented by metal rivets and chain accents on the chest and skirt, instantly exuding the character's unique sweet-meets-cool contrast once put on.
The outdoor location chosen for this shoot was an underground warehouse with a strong industrial vibe. The space was filled with old CRT televisions, green military suitcases, oil drums, and discarded tires, with large street graffiti murals covering the walls. This decadent, ruined backdrop perfectly highlighted the character's tension of staying true to oneself amidst disorder. Mesh nets and climbing frames were scattered across the floor, offering endless framing opportunities throughout the shoot.
The light and shadow in these photos feel wonderfully rich, and I especially loved the photographer's use of red ambient lighting. In the dim environment, strong red rim lighting paired with the camera's dynamic range preserved the textures of the black leather jacket, the skirt, and the contrast with the white collar. The camera used was the Sony A7M5 mentioned in the post paired with a 24-70mm lens; this focal range and body performance proved solid in complex indoor lighting. Even with backlight or side lighting, highlights in the background were not blown out, and skin tones were restored naturally, yielding impressive unedited straight-out-of-camera shots.
There were many fun anecdotes during the photoshoot. To keep the poses dynamic, I tried sitting on a green vinyl chair, standing on ammunition boxes, offering a salute, and making cat paw gestures. Wearing platform black Martin boots with heavy anti-slip treads, standing on those metallic boxes really tested my core strength and balance. Some candid poses look effortless, but I was actually holding my breath and trying hard to stay steady; luckily, the photographer was quick enough to precisely capture many fleeting micro-expressions and movements.
For the makeup design, I intentionally enhanced the reddish flush around the eyes, paired with the pink and black hair, hoping to convey the character's whimsical yet slightly tsundere demeanor. During post-production photo selection, we even cut out photos where expressions felt too stiff, ultimately picking this set that perfectly matches the aura of "Rhapsody Muse" in both angles and expressions.
Overall, this cosplay photoshoot was immensely fulfilling—not only because the outfit looks fantastic, but also because the set decoration and lighting setup gave the photos strong emotional power. Often, cosplay is more than just wearing a costume; it's about conveying that piece of anime character soul into reality through specific lighting and props. This anime-style photography set should allow everyone to see another side of Nangong Yu's cool and fierce charm, beyond simple sweetness. This shoot was also a small personal breakthrough in front-of-camera expression, and I look forward to trying more exciting themes and settings next time.
