Shooting this set of NANA Layla cosplay photoshoots was actually a long-premeditated wish, which was finally realized in this night-scene outdoor shoot. From the beginning of deciding on this character to the final result, the entire preparation process was full of anticipation. In terms of styling, the most eye-catching part is undoubtedly that light pinkish-purple long curly hair. To match the character's magnificent yet slightly fragile trait, I specially chose a black mesh flower hair accessory pinned to the side, paired with earrings featuring delicate tassels. For the clothing, I chose a black glossy slip maxi dress; the high-slit design of the skirt hem is very beneficial for extending the limbs. Combined with that pair of semi-translucent black lace gloves and layered pearl rhinestone necklaces, the overall visual focus falls on the strong contrast of black and white colors as well as the delicate fabric texture.
Among this set of photos, I personally prefer the one with the squatting pose. Standing by the metal railings under the night sky, the high-slit skirt hem falls naturally, revealing the lines of the legs. Paired with black stiletto high heels, this squatting pose not only easily elongates the body proportions but also lets the whole person exude a unique charm that is both relaxed and defensive. The night scene environment places high demands on flash and lighting. Thanks to the photography master's precise control over the light positions this time, the hair strands have distinct layers under the cool light, while the face was effectively brightened through soft light, avoiding looking rigid against the dark night background. Those far-off, out-of-focus city lights in the background transformed into smooth bokeh spots, adding a strong cinematic feel to the frame.
For the other single close-ups, I tried a backward-glance standing pose and a half-body side-profile composition. The expression when not smiling can better get close to the character's innate sense of aloofness. The most narrative moment of the entire photo set lies in the double interaction with my partner "Shinichi". Standing together in the same pathway within the night atmosphere, I leaned lightly behind his shoulder, looking back toward the lens. His black-clothed bassist look, combined with my intricate tulle dress and light-colored long hair, felt like a brief intersection of two people, each carrying their own stories on a bustling late-night street.
For cosplay, recreating a character is definitely not just about wearing the right clothes and putting on a wig; what's more important is capturing the character's spirit. The character Layla carries a charming sense of contradiction—underneath the soft hair color and elegant dressing hides a deep, even slightly rebellious independent aura. I wanted to use this set of night scene photos to do my best to convey this mysterious atmosphere blending with the night. This is also the fun part of an outdoor shoot; the environment's light, shadow, wind, and even the surrounding sounds all help me enter the state better.
Although this shoot was conducted outdoors at night, the overall efficiency was high, and everything from makeup and styling to photo production went smoothly. The details of the styling, such as the wrinkles of the lace gloves, the luster of the necklaces, and the frizz of the wig styling, all did their best to align with the character settings. I am very happy to have completed this creation with my partner and the behind-the-scenes team. This set of prints under the night atmosphere indeed allows people to see a different facet of Layla packed with emotional tension.
