[Remielle cosplay] Zenless Zone Zero: Notes on a White Studio Feathered Wings Photoshoot

When shooting this Remielle cosplay photo set, the biggest regret was that the wings were static and couldn't move. Yet, this turned out to be a fun challenge during our session. Because we needed to capture the airy, weightless aesthetic of the design, I simulated the sensation of wings unfolding by extending my arms and twisting my torso, which is how this over-the-shoulder glance pose came to be.

Remielle's costume from Zenless Zone Zero has a very unique texture. The top is a backless dress paired with slender waist straps, which places high demands on back posture and definition. To match the pristine white theme, the photographer opted for a pure white studio cyclorama, which actually made lighting considerably harder. The white feather dress is the centerpiece of the entire look; because feathers can easily look bulky on camera, we used a blower to keep the hem fluttering in the breeze, creating a vivid sense of dynamic flow.

The leg garter and lace trimming along the legs were also key highlights; to ensure they looked clean and visually balanced in the frame, the photographer spent considerable time calibrating angles. The translucent arm sleeves and ribbons enhanced the kinetic energy of the shots even further—each swing of my arms required careful control of force so the ribbons would billow into graceful curves rather than tangle into a clump.

In fact, the prep work for this shoot was quite extensive. After receiving the outfit, I spent nearly half a day just grooming it; the feather dress and ribbons knotted very easily and had to be smoothed out with care. The wig was pink, paired with blue hairpins and ribbons, and securing these hair accessories took quite an effort. To nail flattering poses during the shoot, I practiced in front of a mirror beforehand to ensure my backline looked graceful while preventing the skirt from obscuring the contour of my legs.

The cut of this costume is a real test of one's figure. For instance, the cutouts around the waist require pacing your breathing carefully; slacking even a little could make the silhouette look sloppy, so even during short breaks I couldn't fully let my guard down and had to maintain proper core tension. The design of the hemline also had its limitations: spinning required extreme caution to avoid stepping on the edges and tripping, making this a bittersweet yet rewarding shooting experience.

Maintaining high-intensity muscular tension while enduring the studio's air conditioning made the shoot physically demanding. The over-the-shoulder glance shots were especially challenging, as I had to balance gentle facial expressions with an elongated, fluid posture, taking numerous attempts to find the most natural equilibrium. Interestingly, an all-white background can easily wash out skin tones into a pale, lifeless look. To preserve the skin's translucency and three-dimensionality, we intentionally added a warm rim light from the side. This kept the white parts of the costume crisp and pure while lending a soft, warm glow to the skin. During post-processing, I made sure to instruct the retoucher not to over-smooth the skin so that natural skin texture remained intact for a more refined finish.

In post-processing, the emphasis was on preserving visual clarity and delicately liquefying the flow of the ribbons and hemline. Communication with the photographer went smoothly throughout; subtle postural tweaks—such as the exact height to lift an arm or the degree to twist my waist—were adjusted on the fly through real-time feedback. Simple as the scene was, the prep work was substantial. Styling the wig took quite a while to make the pink locks drape naturally. The positioning of the floating ribbons was repositioned time and again, as stray ribbons would occasionally obscure my face and disrupt the planned composition.

While it was a pity that we couldn't showcase moving wings this time, freezing the pose into a static frame allowed us to appreciate the beauty of a suspended moment. Shooting this set deepened my connection with the character's nuances, and I hope the final presentation conveys that pure, ethereal atmosphere. That, perhaps, is the unique allure of still photography—freezing dynamic grace forever within a single fleeting instant.
