Convention photos from the TCD convention on July 28, this time collaborating with photographer Jeyboy. The shoot was situated in a dimmer area of the exhibition hall, creating a pitch-black background environment. The lighting primarily relied on direct hard light, which brought high contrast and beautifully showcased the texture of the white lace trims and White stockings. This outfit features rich layering, and the black-and-white color palette truly tests the control of light. Shooting in low light is quite challenging, as dark fabrics easily turn pitch-black while light fabrics tend to overexpose. We experimented with many angles—for instance, the first photo was a high-angle shot reaching out toward the camera, utilizing a slight wide-angle perspective to draw the viewer's eye to hand gestures and facial expressions. To make the White stockings look slender, high-angle shots required careful adjustments to the angle between the subject and the lens. Foot traffic at the convention was heavy; after taking a few photos in a quiet corner, we moved to take some outdoor shots. This black-and-white maid dress combined with light blue hair was instantly recognizable to passersby.
When portraying a character, I usually try my best to maintain their foundational temperament. Rem's personality is rather complex—aloof to strangers yet deeply gentle to someone special. Therefore, during this shoot, I intentionally gave my gaze a subtle touch of detachment while adding a bit of playfulness through finger gestures. Securing the wig and hair accessories was also vital; beyond avoiding disarray in the crowd, it ensured the flower ornaments wouldn't fall off when raising my arms or lowering my head. Makeup strictly followed the character's traits, with red lip makeup serving as the highlight. This set of photos has a strong atmosphere, primarily due to the disappearing background. The benefit of hard light is deepening shadows to accentuate the folds and textures of the fabric, which, paired with a mid-air crouching pose, creates a feeling of detachment from reality. After finishing this set, I was very satisfied with the cool-toned finish. Thanks to photographer Jeyboy for the patient guidance, constantly adjusting my positioning and hand gestures to make these final photos possible.
Lastly, 2D characters often serve as a mirror to real life, and cosplaying them is an emotional release. Although the convention's air conditioning was inconsistent during summer and running around in heavy clothes was exhausting, seeing the final photos made everything completely worthwhile.
