[Domina Cosplay] Cool-Toned Detail Recreation from Overwatch - Image 2

Attempting a game character recreation of Domina's classic outfit in Overwatch, the most headache-inducing part during prep was the gradient plush headpiece on top and the hair's structural support. The white wig required several rounds of trimming and layering to achieve the right fluffiness, while the blue-and-pink plush ball on top needed internal wire lining to keep it standing upright.

To match the character's temperament, I chose a wide sweep of reddish-brown eyeshadow for the makeup, paired with dark reddish-brown contact lenses to replicate her slightly mysterious gaze. After referencing a lot of original concept art and in-game models, I noticed the concept art emphasized upturned eye corners, so I made focused adjustments on the eyeliner. The facial base makeup was kept as light as possible, paired with highlights and contouring to define the face shape.

The texture of this outfit is quite special. For the white parts, to suit lighting brightness, I selected a matte, slightly elastic fabric that avoids harsh glare while maintaining a 3D structure on camera. I particularly love the rigid gold ornament at the collar and the diamond-shaped blue gemstone on the chest—these details are key to giving the look a sophisticated feel. For a perfect fit, the gold choker was custom-made by hand, with a special inner lining structure so it sits securely above the collarbone without slipping. The white plush trim was carefully brushed to yield a fluffy, layered fleece texture.

The light was relatively harsh during this shoot, as I wanted to convey a cool-toned atmosphere. Taking selfies to find angles really tested my experience, requiring height and tilt adjustments on the phone to prevent heavy facial shadows. Sometimes, to achieve a satisfactory composition, I had to continuously try different poses and camera angles. Although I could only strike relatively static poses in front of the lens, I tried my best to simulate the elegance and confidence from the original artwork.

Doing a cosplay always feels like a challenge, especially for a character like Domina with a clear color palette and exotic style, where hairstyle, makeup, and costume are closely interconnected. Although the wig isn't very heavy, creating a high, 3D crown structure required a large amount of hairspray for support, which started feeling a bit heavy after a long shoot. However, these fluffy elements made indoor shooting quite warm, providing a comfortable level of cozy warmth.

Controlling details was the top priority for this shoot. Beyond the main costume, the snugness of the arm bands needed to be just right—neither too tight to restrict circulation nor too loose to slide down when raising my arms. Lightweight materials were used for all accessories to avoid fatigue during long selfie sessions.

The straight-out-of-camera color saturation from the phone wasn't particularly high, but I intentionally controlled the color temperature in post-processing to keep a crisp, cool feel. My personal style leans toward relying on vibrant eye makeup and red irises to capture the visual center against a cool-toned backdrop. The white-pink-blue trio looks very clean in the frame, whereas an overly warm environment would compromise the effect.

In truth, the most enjoyable part of cosplaying is continuously polishing details during prep—watching costume pieces take shape from cut fabric, and finally wearing them to create a subtle connection with the character. Although I didn't prepare complex giant weapon props this time (my tripod probably couldn't hold them anyway), this outfit styling is already distinctive enough. I hope this cool tone and accuracy capture the character's original essence.

I also experimented with different angles during shooting, including slightly low-angle and eye-level shots. The two photos displayed serve as comparison shots, showcasing the character while preserving my personal style features. For a multi-color look intertwining white, blue, pink, and gold, high contrast in post-processing color grading is a big taboo: darkening blacks ruins the original translucent texture of the blue gemstones and hair pieces. Thus, I maintained a soft light quality in the frame, aligning with this character's light, graceful design in Overwatch.

Wigs easily become frizzy during shoots, which is especially noticeable on a white wig. So I prepared a smoothing liquid for hair strands, pausing every few shots to tame stray hairs. This is why selfies are often more time-consuming than photographer shoots, as I have to act as my own stylist. But all that hard work feels worth it the moment I see the final photos. As a detail-oriented cosplayer, the joy of the shooting process goes far beyond the finished images—it includes continuously micro-adjusting my angles in front of the lens. Although this was just a simple selfie check-in, I strove to find the best expressiveness for this character on a flat screen. Under soft lighting, the white-and-blue hair accessories display a dreamy iridescent mix of ice blue and soft pink, which was the dream detail I wanted to capture most.

Although there are no complex backdrops, I hope these selfies convey Domina's cool, elegant demeanor.
