I finally got my hands on the retouched photos from this Lyney and Lynette cosplay sibling shoot taken in an outdoor courtyard on April 19. Although the editing phase took a bit of time and my partner teased me for being an inefficient "silly older brother," seeing the crisp and natural light and shadow effects in the final images makes me feel the prior wait was totally worth it. Taking advantage of the weekend to organize the photos, I'm rushing to share the process and results of this shoot with everyone for this Cosplay sharing post.
For this shoot, we specially chose a sunny afternoon, and the location was an outdoor leisure courtyard with a white iron chair and a green lawn. Natural sunlight is an excellent tool for fill light, and the overall environment creates a lazy and relaxed atmosphere. Instead of complex and tedious studio shoots, we let the characters step into a real natural environment, hoping to capture a more slice-of-life and relaxed side of the characters beyond the stage through this outdoor cosplay photography setup.
Regarding character styling, I have always felt that the costume details for these two characters are exquisitely designed. As the one cosplaying Lynette, I really put a lot of effort into the accessories to recreate that layered silver-white long hair and the highly iconic fluffy cat ears. The small light blue bow on top of the head and the large black-framed glasses are key props that must match the character's mysterious temperament. The cyan-blue trim on the clothes, the black bow tie, and the heart-shaped metal choker—every minor detail strove for perfection without a shred of carelessness. The wig styling also took a lot of time, especially the bangs falling on both sides, which needed a contour that shapes the face while accounting for wind resistance. It was a wonderful practice of Anime-style fashion.
My partner's look as Lyney, on the other hand, was a completely different style. A wine-red silk-textured shirt paired with a black vest, plus a tie and a gold chain rose brooch on his chest—this combination was exceptionally eye-catching under the outdoor light. The metallic reflective texture of that rose brooch was remarkably well-made, instantly bringing to mind his background as a magician. His short silver-white hair and that little streak of red highlight contrast were also very strong; to bring out this slightly messy yet stylish layering, we repeatedly adjusted the direction of the hair strands multiple times before shooting.
During the shooting process, the two of us tried our best to maintain the unique chemistry characteristic of "siblings." We posed on the white iron chair in various ways close to the original setting, sometimes resting our chins on our hands to act cute, and sometimes holding up a phone to take selfies with the front camera. In this set of photos that everyone sees, many are vivid moments captured during the process of taking selfies. We teased each other while looking for the right selfie angles, and this authentic interaction is often much more expressive than forced posing.
Post-production photo retouching was actually a fairly tedious task. Since we shot outdoors, the variations in natural light and the color tones of the background vegetation all needed to be adjusted one by one. We had to ensure that the facial features, makeup, and wigs presented a crisp texture while keeping the overall color palette in a warm and bright atmosphere without looking out of place. This is exactly why the editing took quite some time. Once the final outputs came out, both of us were extremely satisfied with the retouched photos.
I feel the essence of cosplay lies not just in putting on a costume, but in truly drawing close to the characters you love through makeup, expressions, and body language. Although I cosplayed Lynette and my partner cosplayed Lyney, and the two characters have some contrast in their settings, we hoped to present that natural and lively daily state between siblings in front of the lens. Every time a shoot ends and I look back at these photos, I can recall the sunshine, the breeze, and the laughter on the grass that day. Being able to recreate beloved characters from Genshin Impact and record them with photos is a highly rewarding thing.
