Deciding to do The Power card cosplay from Cardcaptor Sakura was mainly because I was drawn to the concept of being both adorable and powerful. As a Clow Card brought to life under Sakura's magic, The Power card feels exceptionally vibrant, and this look perfectly matched my vision of a lively, mischievous, and subtly proud character in this Pink-themed outfit.
Let's start with pre-production. This character has many intricate costume details: pink hair styled into two large high buns, a red marking in the center of the forehead, pointed ears, a red collar, red wristbands with white polka dots, and large red pom-poms around the ankles. To achieve faithful restoration, I spent a lot of time sourcing suitable fabrics. Especially for the loose bloomers on the lower body, achieving the desired drape and weight required repeated patterning and adjusting of the ruffled edges. Because a strap had to be secured at the back, plus adhering the pointed ears to my head, putting everything on was quite time-consuming.
The temperature was relatively high on the day of the shoot, and with the bustling convention crowd, wearing this outfit was quite warm—especially the pom-pom shoes, which made walking a bit tricky. However, communication with the photographer was very professional, and we found a well-lit corridor for our Convention photography. Since it was The Power card, for posing I chose a salute combined with hands on the hips, wanting to express that proud little powerhouse demeanor. The photographer guided me to engage my core slightly when the shutter clicked and focus my gaze straight ahead into the lens, projecting strength without stiffness.
Beyond posing, the real test was capturing the essence of the character's personality in this Roleplay endeavor. The Power card isn't just a brute using raw strength; beside Sakura, it feels more like a bouncy little sprite. Therefore, I kept my expressions playfully cute rather than overly serious or stern. During the shoot, the pom-poms accidentally fell off several times, but I seamlessly worked that into my motions to make it look even more natural and endearing. The photos avoided overly complex post-processing effects, preserving an authentic anime feel that fits the character best.
Although preparing this cosplay was tedious and the costume was heavy, seeing the final photos made every bit of effort worthwhile. If given the chance to find a suitable setting at a future convention, I'll definitely consider doing another interactive pairing. This experience was truly fascinating.
