The biggest highlight of this finished set is the perspective distortion effect from the wide-angle end of the lens. The star magic wand and cloud topper in the foreground are greatly magnified, creating a visually impactful focal point. NightDiva used a high-brightness side light on location, shining on the cyan wig to produce crisp hair highlights and rim lighting. The dark background behind effectively isolated the subject from the chaotic crowd. To achieve this composition, we pushed the magic wand as close to the lens as possible while maintaining body center of gravity without leaning too far back, otherwise the perspective would warp severely. This shooting angle deliberately avoided interference from sporadic spotlights on the venue ceiling, relying solely on single-side light to sculpt 3D depth for the subject and rendering natural light-to-shadow transitions.
The focus of this costume lies in the subtle tailoring of the pink dress. The white section at the neckline looks refreshing, while the large red bow on the chest and details along the short sleeve edges add depth to the garment. I really like the white gloves; they fit snugly and don't feel tight when making poses during photos. The skirt fabric has a nice drape, so when posing, attention was needed regarding the flow of the hem to ensure natural folds. As for that giant magic wand, its main body was custom-made from lightweight materials, so despite its large size, it was fairly stable to hold. The shaft features alternating pink and white spiral stripes, and the yellow star at the top with a white border showed accurate color rendering under fill lights. The prop's texture is matte, preventing excessive reflection and giving the overall photo a softer look.
The Jiangmen Jieyuan Comic Exhibition was bustling with high attendance on the day, with fellow fans in every area. Quietly shooting a good photo in such a noisy environment required close coordination between the photographer and cosplayer. We specifically found a relatively backlit corridor and used lighting to darken the surrounding environment, simulating a stage effect. The venue was quite spacious, making a clean background hard to find, but fortunately, shots taken at this location successfully avoided background clutter. It was hot that day, and although the indoor air conditioning was on high, wearing this outfit while holding the magic wand consumed a lot of physical strength; holding props in position for long stretches made my arms quite sore. However, seeing the final outcome made all the physical exhaustion fade away.
For pose setup, to match the magical girl aesthetic, a slightly low-angle perspective looking up was selected. I extended one arm pushing the magic wand forward while naturally raising the other arm to mimic a casting pose. This posture naturally shifted my center of gravity, allowing the skirt hem to move dynamically in harmony. Eye contact during shooting was also crucial—it needed an interactive connection with the lens, neither too stiff nor overly exaggerated. Finding that state of immersion in the character gave the final photos greater emotional resonance.
Collaborating with NightDiva went smoothly; we communicated our lighting preferences beforehand. At the moment the shutter clicked, we focused on precision between eye expression and prop placement. This fast-paced shooting style is ideal for comic exhibitions, generating high-quality photos within limited time. The photographer had excellent control over the wide-angle lens, making timely adjustments to camera height and distance to manage perspective exaggeration and prevent distorted character proportions.
As cosplay, whether in costume wearing or wig strand directions, everything needs to align with the character's tone. I spent time styling this cyan wig because long straight hair entangles easily and knots when walking around the venue. Smoothing the bangs and side locks gives the face contour a much crisper look. When securing the wig, I used bobby pins extensively so that even with big movements in the exhibition hall, the bangs wouldn't easily mess up, ensuring hair consistency throughout the shoot. The greatest joy of doing cosplay lies in that exact moment of embodying the character, turning 2D designs into real-life concrete imagery. There were many fond memories during filming, like curious onlookers coming over to check out our props, and fellow attendees encouraging each other—these are truly precious aspects of this community.
