[Marisa cosplay] The Ordinary Magician of Touhou Project: DA☆ZE

The theme for this shoot was Marisa from Touhou Project. Cutting straight to the point: the location chosen was a wooden pier by the lake.

Regarding the outfit, this costume is packed with fine details, including the star patterns across the pinafore dress, lace cuffs, ruffled hem, and the white bow at the waist. The pleats of the apron required deliberate ironing to achieve such a fluffy, voluminous silhouette. The brim of the witch hat is lined with ruffles and tied with a purplish-red ribbon, creating a wonderful mood under backlighting.

To capture the flowing feel of the golden hair, I opted for a long wig styled with a side braid. However, because the wind was quite strong during the shoot, the long strands needed constant untangling and fixing. The hat was anchored with numerous bobby pins; while rather heavy to wear, keeping it steady was essential for the visual effect. The broomstick prop had its handle wrapped in white ribbon, which was comfortable to grip, though holding it aloft for prolonged periods was quite taxing on the arms.

For posing, we took advantage of the geometric lines of the wooden bridge alongside low-angle, wide-angle upward shots. This perspective not only flattered leg lines, but also accentuated the dynamic motion of the backlit golden hair caught in the breeze. Jumping shots and single-leg balance poses took multiple attempts; running required caution to avoid stepping on the skirt hem, and we relied on rapid burst shooting to freeze the skirt at its peak flare. Wearing chunky platform shoes made balancing on one leg intensely challenging, demanding constant shifts in posture and center of gravity.

We timed the session for dusk, when the backlit bokeh flares were optimal and the warm tones matched the character's persona flawlessly. The makeup was kept as faithful as possible, spending considerable time dialing in the pupil color and eye details. The photographer swapped between several lenses of different focal lengths: telephoto compressed the background, softly blurring the woods behind the bridge to let the subject pop, while the wide-angle made the most of the railing's perspective lines to heighten spatial tension.

Post-processing preserved the sunset highlights and rich colors, with a specific focus on lifting the rim-lit contours of the hair and skirt to clarify their motion while retaining the sky's pinkish-purple gradient. Before every take, we double-checked that props and outfit pieces were firmly secured. Running around in such a heavy skirt was quite the endeavor, but the resulting set turned out wonderfully.
