Bringing Nangong Yu from Zenless Zone Zero to life this time fulfilled my long-standing desire to portray a mature, commanding character. Before locking in the makeup, I spent considerable time pondering how to capture Nangong Yu's signature blend of dashing composure and subtle menace. Seeing how community discussions frequently associate Nangong with mature elegance, I tailored my expressions and body language to project authoritative poise alongside unflappable confidence. Today, I'm sharing behind-the-scenes thoughts and wardrobe details from these Cosplay convention photos.
The overall ensemble centers on a palette of black, white, and purple, invigorated by vibrant pink highlights that deliver instant visual punch. The upper torso features a cropped Black leather jacket vest as the visual anchor; because this material reflects directional light intensely, managing illumination angles was vital. The white foundation top beneath and the oversized pink bow at the chest forged a bold color contrast. To recreate that distinct fusion of sci-fi tech and anime styling, I positioned a floating purple geometric halo overhead, complemented by pink-and-white gradient animal ears and pink streaks woven through the short black hair, making her instantly recognizable.
The arm styling also boasts rich complexity: black patent sleeves transition into expansive purple flared cuffs, a design that injects immense drama into action poses. Because the bell sleeves are voluminous, any breeze or arm sweep produced striking dynamic motion. However, the vivid purple fabric was prone to highlight blowout under bright daylight, requiring continuous exposure adjustments by the photographer to preserve true fiber color and weave texture. The black choker adorned with a silver star pendant and the utility belt finished with metallic rivets and a cat-face buckle introduced an industrial, mechanical edge to the supple fabrics.
Down below, I paired a black pleated mini-skirt with semi-sheer black thigh-high Stockings and platform lace-up combat boots. These boots worked wonders for elevating overall stature, clicking crisply on the stairs. Admittedly, posing on metal steps in chunky platforms tested my balance; maintaining shifted weight or raising one leg meant tightening my core to stay stable. The banded cuffs of the thigh-high Stockings sculpted the legs cleanly, working with the tiered skirt to visually elongate body proportions.
The shooting took place in a modern facility featuring industrial metal staircases and expansive glass curtain walls—a sleek, cold backdrop that harmonized naturally with Nangong Yu's aloof presence. To prevent static monotony, I cycled through diverse poses: resting my chin in contemplation on the steps, resting a hand on my hip, and utilizing exaggerated perspective angles to amplify visual tension. Facial composure was key: rather than leaning into typical sweetness, the gaze needed to carry a cool, calculating scrutiny fitting a mature persona.
Shooting on location with intricate accessories is physically exhausting. Yet seeing the final retouched frames made all the prep and physical strain worthwhile. Every costume carries its own voice, and this Nangong Yu set proved to be a deeply rewarding endeavor, enriching my connection to the character through both styling and emotional execution.
