This time by the sea, I attempted a set design built entirely around a transparent bobo ball. From preparation to the final prints, it actually took quite a bit of effort, but I personally feel the end result created a wonderful synergy with the specific traits of Toru Asakura from THE IDOLM@STER SHINY COLORS.

We chose to shoot during the blue hour shortly after sunset, a time when the color temperature is exceptionally enchanting. The sky and the sea surface presented a vast, uniform sheet of tranquil blue without any piercing direct sunlight, offering extremely soft illumination. To prevent the frames from looking too dark, we pre-arranged fairy light strings across the sand and stuffed warm yellow light strings inside every transparent sphere prop. This intense collision of cool and warm light was exactly the atmosphere I wanted to express—a lifestyle flavor where a comforting warmth bleeds through a cool, detached aesthetic, making it a perfect piece for this Blue hour photography project.

For the costume, I selected a white square-neck puff-sleeve dress. This simplistic, everyday outfit doesn't feel overdone, aligning beautifully with the character's innate casual charm and unique allure. I also intentionally dialed back the makeup and hair, avoiding heavy colors to instead preserve the subtle layering of the ash-brown wig, giving it a natural, airy lightness.

Interaction with the props serves as the core of these photos. For Figure 3, I chose an angle looking directly into the lens while slightly tilting my head up, cradling the glowing transparent sphere prop with both hands so that the ripples on the water surface echoed the light-transmitting texture of the sphere. Though the sandy ground made footing unstable, the kneeling posture paired with the scattered fairy lights made the scene look wonderfully complete. In other shots, I experimented with different dynamics, like downcast eyes listening to the crashing waves or holding up the sphere to gaze into the distance, hoping to capture varied fragments of emotion during this Seaside cosplay session.

The difficulty of shooting on the beach lies in coordinating with the tides. The incoming and outgoing waves would wet the dress hem and displace the fairy lights buried in the sand, so the waiting time between each candid snap was slightly longer. Fortunately, the material of the transparent sphere refracts highly delicate highlights under soft light, yielding a transparent, dreamlike visual effect.

During post-processing, we didn't distort the ambiance excessively; we primarily preserved the natural undertone of the blue hour, slightly lowered the cool tones in the shadows, and highlighted the light source inside the sphere along with the model's rim light. The overall frame maintained that refreshing, quiet, yet slightly distant tonality. For cosplayers wanting to attempt similar beach-themed atmospheric photography, transparent bobo balls and warm lights are exceptionally accessible yet effective props that can effectively elevate the refinement of your frames.

When shooting these kinds of scenes, I highly recommend picking an evening with calm wind conditions and verifying the high-tide water levels in advance to prevent overwet sand from compromising camera rig safety. Lastly, a special thanks to the photographer's guidance, which helped me discover an even deeper connection with the character in this setting.
