[Cirno cosplay] The sparkling little blue ice crystal spirit in the sun

Today's ice-crystal-style blue and white dress combo paired with the bright outdoor sun really creates an eye-catching effect. As a cosplayer doing a Cirno cosplay from Touhou Project, I decided to recreate her chilly yet agile vibe with this overall look.

Let's talk about the wig first. The light water-blue hair color is actually a real test for lighting and post-processing. I chose a specific version with a bow and snowflake decorations on top. The bangs are trimmed quite neatly, and the slightly shorter layers help accentuate the face shape. The wig strands are very soft, creating an illusion of lightness as they flutter in the wind. Paired with those pointed elf ears and pure blue colored contacts, the chilly aura of the ice crystal spirit immediately comes through. The outer corners of the eyes are slightly highlighted to make them look more watery and radiant, fitting the ice crystal concept perfectly. A light layer of blush prevents the skin from looking too pale under the strong light, keeping the overall makeup look clean and crisp.

As for the outfit, this blue and white intertwined dress has many layers. The neckline features white ruffles paired with a classic large red bow, which is one of the visual highlights of the entire look. The skirt has multiple layers of blue and white pleats, with a crinoline petticoat added underneath to make it very fluffy when walking. When jumping around, the skirt unfolds like butterfly wings. To add more details, I sprinkled fine polka dots and snowflake patterns on the blue fabric, which perfectly echoes the traits of an ice-attributed character. The light blue sash at the waist not only cinches the waist but also adds dynamic movement to the large skirt. The cuffs are also sewn with a lot of delicate lace trims.

Regarding the ice crystal wings on the back, I spent some time repeatedly adjusting the material and angles to achieve that transparent and crystal-clear effect in the sun. The wings are made of a semi-transparent rigid material with subtle laser reflections. For this cosplay, I specially brought along this diamond-shaped laser crystal prop, which shows a rainbow of colors under the refraction of sunlight, fitting the theme of 'the little ice crystal spirit in the sun' perfectly. Sometimes holding up the prop puts a bit of weight on my hands, but for the sake of the picture, I have to work hard to keep my hands steady even if my wrists ache.

The lighting on the day of the convention was indeed very abundant, and outdoor shooting can easily expose details of the makeup and costume. To maintain this clear and transparent feel under strong light, the foundation cannot be too thick; the key lies in simulating the texture of ice and snow through light, shadows, and reflections. The wig tends to lose its definition easily under strong outdoor light, so when communicating with the photographer on-site, we specifically looked for angles that could create shadows and side-backlighting. This makes the strands of the wig look more sparkling and highlights the three-dimensional layers of the blue and white costume. The background of the outdoor exhibition hall is quite spacious with yellow marking lines on the ground. During the shoot, by adjusting the focal length, the background was slightly blurred out, thereby isolating the subject from the crowd and noisy background. These convention photos captured the essence beautifully.

The photographer is very professional and helped take many photos from different angles. There are moments of lightly jumping with lifted legs, a pose that demands a high degree of puffiness from the skirt, requiring the core to tighten during takeoff so the skirt can fully spread out; there are also half-body close-ups holding the crystal prop, which perfectly capture the details of the bow tie, makeup, and the gleam in the eyes. The combination of dynamic snapshots and quiet poses perfectly expresses the duality of this character—both lively and playful, yet with a hint of aloof, chilly pride. In the photos, the folds of the skirt, the lines of the bow, and the arcs of the wig form an excellent visual performance under different lightings.

The most daunting thing about shooting cosplay outdoors is being unable to keep your eyes open due to the blinding sun, while still needing to maintain a perfect expression. Fortunately, it felt quite comfortable that day without being particularly muggy, and following the shooting rhythm went smoothly. In each photo, the ice crystal wings reflect a slightly different luster due to the varying angles, and this randomness in light and shadow is a major joy of convention photos. Compared to complex high-dynamic posed shots, this posture of freely stretching in the sun can better showcase the character's light, agile, and natural state. Although there's no way to perform battle actions like in the original work, this daily-life style of interactive snapshot also endows the character with a vibrant, lived-in feel.

The makeup, costume, and framing this time mainly focused on being refreshing and bright. That blue and white color-matched dress was quite eye-catching in the crowd, making it easy to be recognized when walking around. While the shooting process wasn't entirely effortless, seeing the images gradually take shape in the camera after working hard to maintain every pose under the sun made all the prior preparations feel worthwhile. I hope this set of photos can convey the unique temperament of Touhou Project to everyone.
