This was my first attempt at cosplaying an adult male character, Rafayel, and the entire preparation process and shooting experience were a massive departure from my usual style.
Usually, I mainly shoot loli and youthful girl characters, styles that rely heavily on soft lines and delicate makeup. But for an adult male character, because female bone structure is naturally softer, crafting masculine lines requires much more technique. When putting on this white dress shirt and black pants, the most direct feeling was that no matter how I tried to broaden the shoulders, they still felt lacking in width, and the overall silhouette predictably carried a feminine touch, which troubled me quite a bit early on.
However, after settling on the coordination concept, I decided to focus primarily on eye expression and sculpting the upper half of my face. This time, I deliberately chose a black face mask for concealment so the visual focal point would be completely concentrated on the eyes. For hair color, I picked purple, creating a sharp visual contrast against the crisp white shirt. To test the makeup effect, I didn't add any filters, shooting entirely with my phone's camera. The benefit of going Straight out of camera is the authentic image quality—it reflects true lighting and bone structure. Although it's picky about angles, it turned me into what I call a 'god of the upper face.'
During the shoot, I also experimented with postures and expressions tailored to the character setting, such as slightly tilting my head toward the camera, or toying with the necklace and earrings in my hands. Shooting indoors amidst retro wooden elements and warm light, complemented by a large white floral wall backdrop and an orange backdrop, truly helped immensely with mood and atmosphere. Because I frequently do Cosplay sharing of loli girl styles on social platforms, this adult male attempt made me quite apprehensive.
Yet on that day at the Tianfu Red venue, several friends specifically came over for the Tianfu Red cosplayer photo collection to take photos with me. At that moment, all my inner anxieties were completely washed away by everyone's enthusiasm. Seeing people embrace this look with its subtle contrast gave me much more anticipation to step out of my comfort zone and explore new territory. Straight out of camera photos undergo no complex post-processing, presenting the most authentic state of that exact moment. Although I sometimes poke fun at myself for looking a bit too feminine, it's precisely this genuine sense of challenge that made this Rafayel cosplay experience so uniquely precious.
