[Unicorn Cosplay] A Gentle Corner in Azur Lane: Hazy Flash photography vibe

For this shoot, I chose Unicorn from Azur Lane, experimenting with a front phone camera and direct flash to capture this photoset with a unique Flash photography vibe.

Let's first talk about the design details of the outfit. The main body is crafted from white organza with subtle, fine shimmer across the surface, layered with multi-tiered ruffles and lace patchwork around the neckline and chest, finished with neat edge stitching. The black strapping and golden metallic buckles across the chest create a vivid visual anchor against the pure white base; this classic black-white-gold palette is highly iconic for the character, simple yet distinctly recognizable. The silver sequin embroidery features intricate vine patterns, casting delicate glimmers under the flash.

The Purple wig is the centerpiece of this look: styled in a muted taro purple with grey undertones, shaped into her signature updo buns secured with silver hair accessories and small white blossoms. The temples and forehead feature thick blunt bangs, while the back ends cascade into naturally voluminous loose curls. When struck by direct flash, the highlights of this Purple wig take on a cool-toned, soft texture, while the shadows retain the rich depth of purple without looking washed out.

For makeup, to match the character's eye color, I selected dark purple-grey contact lenses to deepen my gaze. Eye makeup featured voluminous mascara and defined eyeliner along the inner and outer rims, deliberately enlarging the eye contours. For lips, I chose a high-shine berry lip gloss, creating a glossy mirror reflection under the flash to add a dewy finish. The base makeup pursued a porcelain translucent glow, which, combined with the strong frontal light source, recreated the character's pure yet subtly aloof demeanor.

Coming back to the photography itself: the gear was just a regular smartphone front camera, using a high-angle close-up selfie perspective. This angle naturally introduces subtle wide-angle distortion, but perfectly creates an intimate, immersive point-of-view experience. The lighting in both photos was very direct—the flash hitting my face and outfit created strong highlights and a subtle visual softness. This "softness" doesn't mean out-of-focus blur, but rather a dreamy, film-like grain and blooming glow produced by blown highlights and diffused light flare.

Many might feel such intense direct frontal lighting makes images look flat and reduces dimensionality. However, for this character and personal diary photoshoot, this unpolished direct light breaks away from standardized studio lighting, imbuing the photos with a casual everyday intimacy and dreamlike distortion. The faux pink-and-white bouquet in hand served as a balancing prop, where pink blossoms, the Purple wig, and white clothing harmoniously formed a soft, low-saturation color palette.

In post-processing, I kept things simple to preserve the authentic, straight-out-of-phone flash look—which is the core reason behind loving this soft, vintage Flash photography vibe. It retains the spontaneous intimacy of the moment without needing to be retouched to clinical perfection. During shooting, I adjusted the position of my arms and the bouquet angle several times to ensure the foreground flowers wouldn't overshadow the subject while balancing the visual weight of the black strapping.

Overall, even without complex studio sets or outdoor locations, relying solely on Unicorn's classic Azur Lane design, a single flash light source, and simple framing was enough to pour my understanding of the character into these frames for this Cosplay sharing.
