Today, I shot a set of everyday Japanese-style JK portrait photos at a subway station in Shanghai. A while ago, we talked about wanting to shoot some slice-of-life photos steeped in everyday reality, so we turned our focus toward the transit stations we pass through every day. To fit the Japanese school aesthetic, I deliberately picked this white sailor-collared uniform. The top is a short-sleeved blouse accented with pale blue striping and clean neckline tailoring, paired with a white pleated skirt for a fresh, crisp palette. For socks, I chose knee-high White stockings that flatter calf contours nicely, finished with flat black loafers for walking comfort. To balance the pure school uniform feel with wearable realism, I slung a black leather shoulder bag over my arm to add an everyday commuter touch.
The shooting location was a transfer concourse with expansive floor-to-ceiling windows. As natural sunlight streamed in, it cast striking geometric light and shadow across the walls and floors. Being a public space, we avoided morning and evening rush hours to steer clear of obstructing pedestrians. The photographer was wonderful at capturing organic moments without forcing exaggerated 2D poses, instead guiding me through casual activities—gazing out the window, reading on the steps, or drinking water beside a vending machine.
My favorites from the set are the shots in the stairway. The stainless steel handrails and granite steps formed a sharp textural contrast against the soft white uniform. Sitting on the steps turning book pages, using the balustrade as foreground added layered depth, with the white knee-high socks and the pleated skirt draping in effortless harmony. There was also a candid shot turning back on the stairs with a hand resting on my hair—the sun kissed the strands just right, evoking that nostalgic feeling of parting ways with friends right after school. Another shot standing by the window holding a water bottle captured a gentle breeze lifting my hair naturally.
Overall, the atmosphere throughout this shoot was delightfully relaxed. The Japanese-style JK aesthetic doesn't demand complicated props or backdrops; its essence lies in genuine authenticity. Transforming an everyday transit hub into a scene brimming with youthful nostalgia made for a fascinating contrast. When selecting the outfit, I was mindful that a white pleated skirt might reflect harshly, but fortunately, the soft ambient light produced a wonderfully translucent result. We encountered minor hurdles with crowds, and while we chose quieter corners, background passersby occasionally stepped into the frame, though that paradoxically heightened the realistic slice-of-life texture. We studied the light patterns beforehand and found that around 3:00 PM, sunlight streaming through the glass created the ideal rim lighting along the silhouette. To keep things effortless, my makeup remained light and breathable, preserving natural skin texture with a neutral rose-nude lip color. Each click of the shutter recorded a quiet yet vibrant everyday fragment. More than just a photoshoot, it felt like an urban stroll seeking out youth amidst a concrete jungle, and I hope these photos offer some inspiration for everyday coordinates and portrait posing.
