Today I shot this 2025 Racing Miku cosplay photo set at an outdoor venue in Shanghai. The 3 PM sunlight was extremely blinding, the venue was open with no shade, and the concrete ground was baked hot. To match the racing theme, the location was chosen in an area featuring black-and-white checkered patterns and English letters. The costume design of Racing Miku is very unique, with a white cropped top paired with an asymmetric black skirt hem, and the lower body features asymmetric pink polka-dot Stockings and white lace-up boots, giving it a strong techwear and racing vibe. Both the top and the flag are printed with the GOODSMILE RACING logo. The biggest challenge during the shooting process was that huge flag. The flag pole is made of metal material, and coupled with the area of the flag itself, waving it was extremely exhausting. To capture the dynamic feel of the flag fluttering, I needed to grip the flag pole with one or both hands, waving it forcefully while also controlling facial expressions and body posture. The photographer used a Sony mirrorless camera for candid shots, enabling eye-autofocus and high-speed continuous shooting modes to ensure a high photo output rate. Although the sunlight was great, it tended to produce strong shadows, so we used a reflector to fill in light on the face, preserving more skin details. I tried a variety of poses, including standing and waving the flag, lifting one leg, and even lying on the checkered ground. For the lying pose, to achieve the visual effect of super long legs, the photographer adopted a high-angle overhead shot, spreading the flag out as the background. The pink polka-dot Stockings and white boots were extremely eye-catching in the lens. Because the costume is relatively revealing, prolonged posing outdoors is actually a heavy test of physical strength, especially needing to strike powerful poses without letting the actions look limp. Racing Miku gives off an energetic vibe, so in terms of gaze and expression, I tried my best to maintain firmness and confidence. The wig features lake-blue twin-tails; to maintain the hairstyle's three-dimensional feel and smoothness, it was styled with hairspray and a hair straightener before heading out. But because there was wind outdoors, the twin-tails were prone to tangling during the shoot, and the assistant had to help comb them after every set of actions. In terms of makeup, to match the blue hair, lake blue and pink from the same color family were chosen for eyeshadow blending, paired with blue contact lenses to make the gaze look deeper. False eyelashes were applied in two layers to enhance the comic book feel. To ensure skin texture, the base makeup was translucent, with a focus on setting powder to prevent makeup melting from high heat. As an important prop, the flag not only needed to be held, but its fluttering also needed to be utilized for composition. One photo features me lying on the ground with the flag draped over my body; this large-area color block contrast photographs extremely well, but it also required adjusting the flag's wrinkles to avoid blocking the face. To capture a few good photos, I repeatedly lay down and got up on the concrete ground, getting my clothes covered in dust. When standing, to make the legs look longer, the high heels stepped on the checkered lines, and the body's center of gravity leaned forward. All these details required the photographer to constantly adjust behind the lens, searching for the best light and shadow angle. This shoot, from location scouting and makeup/styling to post-processing, tried to stay as close to the 2025 Racing Miku settings as possible. The outdoor blue sky, white architecture, and black-and-white checkers on the ground formed a great color contrast, and the post-processing color grading also leaned towards a bright and translucent Japanese style. The color reproduction of the Sony mirrorless camera is quite good, especially under strong light, where the saturation control of pink and blue is excellent. The entire shoot took three hours, changing two sets of actions and shooting nearly a thousand photos. Selecting and retouching photos took another two days. Behind every set of cosplay photos lies high-intensity physical labor and meticulous mental labor. Being able to leave this set of photos on the track's checkered lines feels amazing.
