Shooting this swimsuit photo set was actually a spur-of-the-moment decision outside our original plan. I had originally brought the wig and makeup along just to vacation by the pool, but seeing the glistening water surface and breathtaking sunset backlighting, professional habit kicked in and out came the camera. Occurring right at the tail end of August, the sunlight was no longer as harsh as midday, casting a remarkably soft halo over my hair and naturally establishing a fresh, gentle tone for the entire photoset.
As for this styling, the essence of Sangonomiya Kokomi as a character lies in that distinct combination of coolness and gentleness unique to Watatsumi Island. Therefore, in terms of makeup, I specifically opted for a clean, translucent base makeup, focusing on creating a weightless, natural finish. Paired with light pink hair and blue-green inner highlights, I selected a soft violet-blue eyeshadow to harmonize with the gradient colors of the swimsuit itself. Because we were shooting on location by the poolside with several water-splashing shots, the wig received water-resistant treatment on top of styling. Maintaining wig texture in humid air requires diligent care to avoid clumping or looking dry; to preserve a breezy, flowing look, I spent almost every break combing through to prevent hair knots.
We chose an outdoor swimming pool rather than a simple studio backdrop. The light reflections off the pool water add depth to the composition, while the stainless steel handrails and surrounding greenery served as natural leading lines. The shots showing water splashes and leaning against the pool railings were designed to enhance the sense of interaction between the character and the environment; the photographer captured them with precision, perfectly seizing the dynamic momentum of each fleeting moment. The side-tie design of the swimsuit is slightly intricate, requiring careful tension adjustments to fit snugly without digging into the skin on camera. This camisole ruffly design is wonderfully youthful, but can easily look bulky if body proportions aren't aligned, so I paid extra attention to side-profile and head-turn angles, utilizing torso twists to accentuate dimension.
The highlight reflections in many photos were actually natural light effects from the setting sun. We didn't bring extensive lighting gear, relying entirely on late afternoon natural light to render the atmosphere. The surrounding plants created beautiful out-of-focus bokeh spots, yielding a truly dreamlike bokeh in the shoot. The poolside water-splashing action seemed simple on paper, but in reality took nearly thirty shots to capture the single most satisfying splash. The open hand angle, the point of splash impact, combined with eye contact turned back toward the lens, instantly elevated the vibrancy of the set without feeling stiff. Compared to studio work, outdoor natural light is a genuine bonus for Cosplay photography in swimsuits.
Shooting this set took quite a toll on physical stamina. The wig became much heavier once wet, and having damp hair draped across shoulders and back felt rather uncomfortable, not to mention constantly minding steps and seating postures to prevent accidental exposure. Yet seeing the airy, free visual feel in the final edits made all the effort worthwhile. This shoot also taught me how much scene context boosts character expressiveness; sitting poolside or standing casually required no complex props—the dynamic interaction between person and water served as the ultimate visual backbone.
Many people ask whether shooting a swimsuit photo in summer feels awkward. For cosplay, however, the outfit itself is an intrinsic part of the character—immersing oneself in the character's mindset to express emotion is far more important than just looking pretty. This time, I tried a lively, natural approach to Cosplay photography, avoiding rigid static poses in favor of candid snapshots of standing, turning, glancing down, and splashing water. This non-factory-line method of creating photos retains more authentic real-life essence, imbuing the final set with a richer narrative feel. Though summer is drawing to a close, this visual set, imbued with summer atmosphere, sunlight, and pool water, will naturally preserve these beautiful moments.
