It was already late at night when we shot this series. The streets had stripped away their daytime bustle, perfectly suiting the urban decadence we aimed to convey. In these frames, my persona is Miss Yamada (Miss Yamada cosplay)—a 2D girl taking a smoking break behind a supermarket. To faithfully recreate this grounded yet fringe temperament, we crafted two distinct looks. The first styling combined a white T-shirt, black leather detached arm sleeves, and a black miniskirt paired with Black stockings and beige ankle boots. The structured stiffness of leather created a tactile contrast against the sheer, form-fitting Black stockings, which was a nuance I paid close attention to when putting the look together. In the shot crouching along the crosswalk, the camera angle was actually very low; to accentuate the elongated leg lines, I repeatedly adjusted the angles of my knees and toes so that the sheen of the stockings caught the streetlamps naturally. The cigarette in hand was an unlit prop, but to make the gesture look effortless, I practiced several cigarette-holding poses in front of the mirror, eventually settling on the most relaxed grip. My gaze also needed to drift into a subtle daze rather than looking forced.

The second look transitioned into a yellow-and-blue striped shirt, a red apron, a red bandana headband, and paperclip hairpins. This ensemble carried a strong Japanese vintage workwear aesthetic; when shooting around the stone steps and iron gate, the rugged heft of the environment clashed with the vivid red-and-yellow stripes, looking exceptionally harmonious on camera. To accompany this look, I opted for ultra-long nails studded with rhinestones—a delicate detail that heightened sophistication in close-up shots. For the frame leaning back on the steps, the photographer adopted a high-angle downward perspective. This required my body to remain thoroughly relaxed rather than rigid, while naturally drawing the prop cigarette closer to my face to guide the eye in a languid, moody flow.

Throughout the session, we constantly debated the lighting. Night street photography lacks key directional studio strobes, relying entirely on street lamps and shop neon signs. To keep my face from falling into heavy shadow while preserving the layered depths of the nocturnal background, the photographer continuously fine-tuned angles, using street corners and architectural edges to steer available light—sometimes even waiting for approaching car headlights to wash across my face. As a cosplayer, I believe emotional expression often matters more than literal garment accuracy in cosplay. Miss Yamada has very little 'dialogue' in this context; it is far more about quiet, solitary presence. I needed to maintain an effortless tousled look as breezes swept through my hair, capturing a demeanor that felt weary yet comforted by the sanctuary of the night the moment the shutter clicked. This required completely immersing myself in the fiction of the setting.

What truly draws me to this series is that it didn't chase grandiose, cinematic spectacle; instead, it turned the lens toward an ordinary street corner, using everyday apparel to construct a frame belonging to the 2D realm. In this process, I was not merely portraying a role, but living an entirely different nocturnal existence. All exhaustion vanished the moment I received the final edits—every deliberate detail and emotional nuance ultimately settled into those quiet, lingering moments.
