This photoshoot for Hanami Ume cosplay was primarily aimed at capturing both sides of our little sister: her everyday self in the classroom and her shining persona on stage. For the wig, I selected an orange-red tone, trimming it into a textured, voluminous style. Paired with orange colored contacts and eye makeup, it was all about channeling that spirited, youthful vibe. The pink cardigan is crafted from soft-knit fabric, with blue striped accents and the crest on the chest meticulously rendered. To harmonize with the classroom setting for this School style cosplay, the bottom half paired a pleated skirt with White over-the-knee socks and sneakers. This naturally highlighted leg lines during dynamic poses like kicking up a leg and flashing a peace sign, conveying that carefree after-school playfulness.
When shooting in the classroom, to avoid harsh direct sunlight through the windows casting unflattering shadows across my face, the photographer and I repeatedly adjusted the reflectors before settling on the lighting foundation for this set. The plush mascot held in my hand was a specially prepped prop designed to inject a bit of playful everyday interactivity. The second outfit—the white, red, and yellow stage performance costume—was shot in the studio; standing atop a circular podium with hands raised overhead was meant to seize the exact moment spotlights beam down. The red-and-white gloves and boots exude high-octane idol energy, and the tiered skirt billowed dynamically during twirls, giving it true stage presence.
Shifting from the casual everyday atmosphere of the classroom to the brilliant sparkle of the stage required constant state adjustments throughout the shoot. However, being able to transition between wardrobe and scenarios to honor the character's multifaceted persona made for an immensely rewarding cosplay journey. Examining fabric textures in detail and matching them with expressive gestures and nuances is where the true joy of delving into cosplay has always resided.
