[Sakuya Izayoi Cosplay] Touhou Project's Maid of Time, Controlling Time and Blades

This set of Sakuya Izayoi cosplay consists of convention photos taken recently at an anime expo.

This time, I selected the Chief Maid's classic blue-and-white color scheme clothing from Touhou Project. Regarding the silhouette choice, I specially picked a style where the skirt hem carries its own sense of support without looking overly bloated, so that in a high-traffic environment like a convention, the gravitational drape of the costume can be maintained relatively well, avoiding skirt deformation due to crowds or walking. The skirt body heavily utilizes a deep blue velvet-textured fabric, which absorbs light well and presents a very steady texture in indoor or twilight low-light environments. The neckline and chest areas are stacked with multi-layered white ruffled lace, which, cooperating with the white bowknot right in the center, delivers a highly distinct color contrast—one of the character's most recognizable designs in this maid outfit.

The wig part selected silver-white high-temperature fiber, with a certain layered trimming at the hair ends to preserve the crispness of short hair without looking too stiff. Paired with the white lace headband on top of the head, the overall head styling looks very clean. For makeup, I didn't choose overly heavy eyeshadow but instead highlighted the character's cold and confident temperament through slender eyeliners and cool-toned lipstick.

For Sakuya Izayoi, props are the soul of the entire look. Besides the two silver blades in hand, a large number of floating mechanical clock and pocket watch elements were integrated into the scene setup this time. Particularly worth mentioning are several pocket watches with transparent dials where the internal gear structures can be clearly seen, carrying a high accuracy. Before the shoot, the photographer and I spent a massive amount of time testing the camera positions for the floating special effects to ensure these clocks and daggers interlace naturally in the frame without making it look cluttered. Meanwhile, to match the character setting of manipulating time, we utilized blue light strips and post-processing special effects to create a visual effect akin to electric currents surrounding the weapons.

This set of photos ultimately selected a cool-toned and dim environment as the background. The reflective effect of slight standing water on the ground and the drifting water vapor in the air烘托 out the atmosphere of a rainy night or a damp corner, making the cool blue special effects light and the reflections of mechanical metal stand out even more in the frame.

The background at a live convention is actually quite cluttered, so being able to shoot such a clean-background, highly atmospheric set of convention photos relies heavily on the photographer's management of camera position and depth of field. When posing, I tried my best to avoid overly exaggerated movements, choosing instead postures that lean toward being static, elegant, but carrying a trace of combat readiness, which is closer to that composed, calm feeling found in the 2D original art illustrations. Through multiple fine-tunings of the hand knife-holding angles and gaze directions during the shooting process, we captured a few frames with highly sharp gazes and stretched postures.

For post-processing color grading, we focused on darkening the background brightness and enhancing some highlights on the metal edges to make the overall layering of the frame more three-dimensional. Although the location was at a convention, the final cuts maximize the avoidance of passersby and cluttered booths, preserving the pure texture of cosplay photography. Completing this makeup, styling, and props truly required a lot of thought on detailing restoration. Being able to ultimately present photos that both fit the 2D settings and possess a certain realistic atmosphere delivered an excellent experience. Driving this type of character with cool maid attributes requires not just wearing the clothes, but matching that elegant, composed temperament from the gaze and posture, which is a direction I have always pursued in Anime-style photography.
