The costume design of the character Raiden Shogun has an exceptionally strong sense of layering. After capturing and recording this set of selfies, I plan to talk about some experiences and details of this look in practical practice.
Let's first talk about the visual focus of this outfit; the layering of the waist and the complexity of the ties are the biggest highlights. The dark purple undergarment paired with a light-colored outer robe has details at the neckline and cuffs that relatively flatter the figure, but the most brilliant part is definitely that massive purple bow waistband. To restore the character's "lightning" temperament, the color tone needs to maintain a certain muted deep purple rather than an overly vibrant bright purple, so that the color reproduction in photos will align closer to the solemnity of the original 2D artwork. The lower body adopts a short inner piece paired with glossy black over-the-knee boots, with the pair of purple bows at the top of the boot shaft forming a top-to-bottom echo with the waistband. This thick-soled and strapped design of the soles appears very solid in a standing pose, and combined with the long boots, it can elongate the leg proportions.
Regarding accessories, the left hand habitually grasps that long sword prop symbolizing "Musou"; the black base color of the scabbard paired with purple knots maintains consistency with the outfit's color system. The gesture of holding the prop actually requires a bit of clever skill—it needs to look like holding a weapon without appearing overly forceful, which would cause a stiff posture. During the mirror selfie, I chose to tilt my body slightly, letting the fabric at the waist and the scabbard behind me form a front-and-back sense of space, so that a 3D layered depth can be captured in a flat mirror.
The wig this time is short hair leaning toward deep black, where the treatment of sideburns and bangs is quite critical. Because the character Raiden Shogun has a specific hairstyle curvature, and everyday mirror selfies can hardly avoid the visual obstruction caused by the phone lens, the direction of the hair must be fixed in advance; otherwise, it is easy to compromise the accuracy. For the makeup, I applied a relatively cool tone treatment, cooperating with the wig's texture to build the character's unique aura.
Speaking of the limitations of mirror selfies, it actually heavily tests body control. Because one has to hold the phone to block the face while the other hand holds the prop, the stability of the standing pose must be firm; otherwise, the shot can easily result in a shifted center of gravity or relaxed waist and abdomen lines. I intentionally selected the full-view perspective of the first image among these two as the main featured picture; the leg lines and the width-to-waist ratio are just right in the mirror reflection. The clothing material is a relatively lightweight blend of silk-like and cotton-like textures, which both guarantees drape and allows for comfortable movement. However, the boots are indeed a drawback; for a better silhouette and the luster of patent leather, a lot of foot flexibility was sacrificed, and the ankles get a bit tired after shooting for a long time.
I've always felt that the sense of "eternity" and majesty represented by Raiden Shogun isn't just propped up by a magnificent appearance, but lies even more in the character's posture and that immovable-as-a-mountain aura. Although this time was just an indoor selfie record during the Cosplay try-on phase, the moment I stood fully dressed in front of the mirror, I felt that the character's soul could actually briefly attach itself to the performer. This costume has an immense number of details; managing every single rope knot and accessory took quite a lot of time. For instance, some fabric patchwork on the back and the drape of the sleeves all required micro-adjustments by myself to capture the absolute best effect. For a Cosplayer who loves this kind of design with rich Japanese styles, combining samurai and mature older-sister (onee-san) vibes, the charm and challenge of this outfit are perfectly proportional. Ultimately, being able to personally interpret a highly popular character I favor and engage in this deep Cosplay outfit experience is in itself a highly fulfilling and satisfying thing, paving an excellent path for future Anime-style photography sessions.
