These Convention photos from the Hangzhou Arknights Only event, 'Defending Glory,' are finally here! The convention hall environment was understandably noisy and chaotic; to channel Viviana's aloof, sacred persona, we sought out a relatively clean corner framed by industrial beams, using crimson ambient gel lighting to sculpt a moody, dark-toned atmosphere.
The costume and prop details were extraordinarily intricate. The white cowl hood was accented with black cross straps and cross emblems, while the plush beast ears on the sides and the massive black stag antlers crowning my head carried substantial visual weight. Securing the antlers and beast ears meant anchoring numerous concealed hairpins deep within the wig; after walking around the convention floor all day, my neck and shoulders were definitely aching. The inner black corseted bodice featured functional zippers and crimson piping accents, complemented along the arms by elaborate white detached sleeves and metallic buckles. On the lower half, Fishnet stockings paired seamlessly with the coordinate, catching the crimson rim lighting with stunning tactile texture.
The trickiest part of the shoot was handling the props. In the first frame, I cradled the curved golden weapon prop in my left hand; with my right hand clad in a black glove to match the aesthetic, keeping the heavy prop steady over long exposures was taxing. For the second shot, we switched to a lit vintage brass candelabra. To capture soft candlelit shadows dancing across my face, photographer @Nord and I adjusted our blocking over numerous takes; draughts on the convention floor kept blowing out the candles, or the light falloff would miss the optimal angle. Yet it was precisely those flickering flame catchlights that breathed organic life and enigmatic mystery into the composition.
As someone who cosplays regularly, I truly relish interacting with fellow fans at conventions. Portraying Viviana was not only driven by her striking character design, but also because realizing her wardrobe and gear provides a profound sense of cross-dimensional fulfillment. From sculpting the wig and fine-tuning makeup nuances to controlling physical poise on the fly, everything demanded spontaneous adaptation in the field. Even though the day was physically exhausting and the ensemble was quite heavy, seeing the deliverables crystallized on camera made every single hardship worthwhile.
Heartfelt thanks to the photographer for their sharp lenswork, and to the friends on site who helped smooth down garments and manage bulky props. The true magic of conventions lies in gathering with like-minded creators to bring our beloved characters to life. These Convention photos capture the authentic light, shadow, and mindset of that moment, and I hope everyone can feel the singular mood beneath that dark crimson glow.
