This shoot took place in a traditional Japanese-style garden featuring wooden sliding doors, wooden corridors, and cherry blossom trees that happened to be in full bloom, giving the entire scene a very soft baseline tone. The idea for this look was set back when preparing the costume, aiming for harmony with this bright, warm-toned environment. A light golden slightly wavy wig was chosen, paired with high-tied red-and-white headwear and hanging spheres, making the overall look even more vibrant.
In fact, lighting conditions on site fluctuated between overly cloudy and direct sunlight, imposing strict requirements on exposure. Thanks to the camera equipment support, my face maintained a translucent texture even when backlit. The hairstyle needed to seamlessly connect with the headwear, so I styled an updo with layered texturing near the top of my head, allowing the wig's texture and orange gradient to show from the side. Fixing the headwear was also a minor hurdle; to keep it from shifting during frequent pose adjustments, auxiliary bobby pins were used internally.
The outfit's layering is quite rich. The upper body consists of an orange-red single-sleeved kimono-style top paired with a white bandeau inner top. The shoulder features the familiar asaha (hemp leaf) pattern patchwork with a soft touch. To accommodate freedom of movement during dynamic poses, the sleeve cuffs are designed loosely. The brown leather skirt and multiple belts around the waist form a crucial part of shaping an overall sharp, capable look. The thick red-and-white twisted rope attached at the side of the waist was adjusted multiple times during shooting so it wouldn't look too bulky, allowing it to fall naturally along the waistline and create a light, dynamic feel. The red koi tattoo stickers on my arm were also a detail, applied carefully along muscle contours so they didn't look fake up close.
Props were abundantly prepared. One was a round fan bearing a large "Matsuri" (festival) character, while the other was a large longbow for shooting. Holding different props in each hand required completely different center of gravity and body postures. Holding the fan required turning the body slightly sideways with a wrist twist outward, making the persona look more playful. Picking up that longbow required lowering the center of gravity slightly and engaging core waist strength. To showcase both prop completeness and outfit structure, we captured sitting, standing, bow-holding, and fan-holding poses. Sitting on the wooden floor, the leg armor paired with a Black stockings cosplay element and red-and-black shoes created extended lines that gave the composition strong visual impact. Finding the right angles throughout required switching through numerous poses.
Post-processing enhanced detail preservation and skin-smoothing efficiency. The overall color palette was straightforward, primarily echoing warm tones and orange-red, which, together with the pink-white cherry blossoms and dark wooden doors in the background, formed a strong Japanese style. The photographer made excellent use of wooden framing compositions, wrapping the character inside the depth of the Japanese-style garden. Everyone was deeply engaged throughout the entire session.
