This Sanya travel photography session for the Marin Kitagawa cosplay seaside look required a lot of thought from makeup and hair to the final deliverables. Sanya's sea breeze and UV rays are variables that must be dealt with during a shoot. To restore the character's energetic trait, I chose light golden long straight hair with a natural luster. Sea breeze easily tangles hair, so during styling, a lot of styling spray was used at the roots, and hair care oil was applied to the ends to ensure a flowing feel during running and turning without looking frizzy.
The makeup focus was on a clear, translucent look with slightly reddish eye makeup, paired with a fresh pink lip color to highlight the relaxed vibe of a summer vacation. Pink heart-shaped sunglasses and white flower hair ornaments were the highlights of the whole styling, echoing the beach environment while adding visual layering. On the clothing side, a white translucent long-sleeve crop top paired with frayed denim shorts is very practical under Sanya's high temperatures, and the translucent material also produces a lightweight dynamic motion when blown by the sea breeze. A pair of simple white flat slide sandals was chosen for the feet, making it convenient to move around the beach and shallow water areas.
The theme of this shoot is the Evolution Theory of ACG Accounts, and my idea was to try more diverse expressions in different real locations. The biggest challenge of seaside shooting is light and tides. To avoid the strong noon glare, we scheduled the shoot for after 4:30 PM. At this time, the sunlight turns warm yellow, shining sparklingly on the sea surface, and the skin tones look softer.
The image of running in the waves in the first photo was actually captured candidly. I stepped barefoot into the shallow water area, running against the waves while the photographer turned on high-speed burst mode to capture the splashing water and flying hair. This dynamic shooting method is more natural than posed shots and better conveys the lively side of the character. The second photo, looking back, utilized the extension lines of the beach and the horizon for composition, turning the body slightly sideways to look back at the lens, which not only showcases body curves but also gives the frame a stronger narrative sense.
During a Seaside photoshoot, the use of props is also crucial. That off-white straw hat is not just a sun-shading tool; holding it in hand or half-covering the face enriches hand gestures and avoids the awkwardness of having nowhere to put one's hands. The ribbon of the straw hat fluttering in the sea breeze also adds to the liveliness of the frame. From the preliminary preparation of clothing and props to adjusting the state on-site, every step requires energy input. This travel photography experience gave me a deeper understanding of photography. The natural environment brings many uncertain factors, such as sudden sea breezes or unstable light, but it is precisely these factors that give the photos a sense of reality that studio shoots cannot replicate. Moving forward, I will continue to try integrating characters into different real-world scenes, recording more interesting works with the lens.
