[Saigyouji Yuyuko cosplay] Gorgeous Dress in Touhou Project, Freezing a Beautiful Moment Under the Cherry Blossom Trees

This set of photos features a look from the Touhou Project series that I tried during the Cherry blossom season, portraying Saigyouji Yuyuko. Huge thanks to my dear friend Lidao for helping carry this outfit over! From the fabric to the tailoring, it's very substantial, especially the large sheer sleeves and the blue tassels at the waist. Combined with the white lace headpiece and red accents, the blend of traditional Eastern style and Lolita style elements is executed very cleverly.

The shooting location was a Japanese garden filled with blooming cherry blossoms. The background of stone lanterns and cherry blossom trees fit the character's temperament perfectly. Paired with my light-colored wig and light pink makeup, the overall image presented a cool yet soft visual effect. During the shoot, I intentionally chose several poses with my arms outstretched, letting the wide sleeves hang and spread out naturally, which, under the high-key lighting, brought out a lightweight and ethereal feel.

Regarding the head styling, the headpiece was much larger than expected. To avoid looking top-heavy on camera, I slightly volumized my hair and arranged the white lace trimming and small blue ribbons in a balanced layer, creating a nice visual balance with the voluminous, fluffy skirt below. For makeup, I skipped heavy eyeshadows in favor of soft pink to recreate the character's ethereal, translucent vibe, while light pink contacts made my eyes look softer and gentler.

This costume has many intricate details, such as the tassels on the waist sash and the dark floral patterns along the hem. Although the large areas of light blue and white look very pure from afar, close observation reveals exquisite stitching and splicing craftsmanship. To capture that gorgeous yet lightweight feel, the photographer's guidance was key, encouraging me to try various sleeve-waving and turning movements. The fluttering sleeves captured at just the right moments preserved the exact instances of the outfit unfurling in the wind.

I was pleasantly surprised by how this outfit performed under natural light; I was initially worried that an all-white look might appear overly pale, but the actual result was very soft. Backlighting under the cherry trees and diffuse reflection from the stone pavement made the sheer fabric glow with a subtle sheen—this translucent texture is indeed far better suited for Outdoor photography than indoor studio shoots. Although moving around in wide sleeves and multi-layered hemlines was somewhat inconvenient—requiring constant care not to bump the skirt against stone lanterns—these adjustments were well worth it for better visual results.

The shooting location was specifically chosen beside traditional Japanese-style architecture, where several quaint stone lanterns and blooming cherry blossom trees formed excellent foregrounds and backdrops. The grey stone textures and subtle cherry pink blended seamlessly with this white and blue outfit, looking remarkably harmonious. I incorporated cool expressions and elegant static postures into these photos, hoping to convey the character's gentle melancholy and ethereal aura.

The actual shoot took about half a day. Because the clothing was heavy, I took a short break in between. When touching up my makeup, I noticed the blush had faded slightly and quickly reapplied a peach-colored blush so my complexion wouldn't look too pale—after all, under outdoor light, a touch of natural rosiness makes the person look much more vibrant.

The hair was extended using wig pieces. To create these fluffy curls, I specifically curled them the night before shooting and fixed them the next day.

The greatest charm of dresses combining gorgeous Eastern elements lies in the sweeping momentum of the skirt when walking. Thus, while posing, I deliberately shifted my center of gravity slightly, using body rotation to swing the sleeves out. Looking at the raw shots afterward, several snapshots perfectly caught the optimal moments of the skirt billowing, even the photographer remarked on how photogenic such a large dress was.

Although transporting this heavy gear was exhausting, being able to document a complete work like this and present a character from Touhou Project in a real-world setting to everyone makes me feel truly happy. I enjoy the freedom of stepping into a character's outfit to experience another world. Standing under the cherry blossoms in this dress, I felt as though I was genuinely immersed in that poetic and fantasy-filled world.
