Cosplaying Yangyang from Wuthering Waves began with my deep admiration for her serene yet unwavering poise even in the face of adversity. To bring out the best in this set, I invested plenty of thought into costume selection and wig styling during the early prep stages. The transition from black and blue highlights to white tips seen in the photos actually required layering, splicing, and positioning multiple sections of hair strands to achieve a seamless, natural gradient highlight. Securing that signature cowlick on top with precision was essential to truly capturing the character's spirit.
Regarding the attire, the main material is a breathable jacquard fabric with subtle woven textures, complemented by white feather embellishments, blue satin, and delicate Chinese-style elements. When putting on the outfit, I paid special attention to the shoulder lines, ensuring the feathers appeared fluffy without looking bulky. The headpiece is crafted from a rigid beige material, finished with two vibrant red tassels. This color combination of red, black, white, and blue might feel cool and aloof at first glance, but up close, it radiates a distinct vitality.
Since this shoot mainly consisted of selfies, finding the right angles and lighting relied entirely on coordinating my phone and the mirror. The mirror reflections allowed me to check in real time whether my expressions were on point and if my poses were sufficiently relaxed and open. Sometimes, casual cosplay selfies feel like the closest way to capture a character's everyday life, offering an authentic self-expression in a familiar setting. The light-colored wall backdrop ensured that adding luminous white birds and semi-translucent falling feathers in post-processing didn't clutter the frame, but instead enhanced the narrative mood.
Every time I cosplay, I think about how to break the fourth wall. Many believe putting on a wig and costume is all it takes, but to me, capturing expressions and gestures is what truly brings a character to life. While styling my hair that day, I chatted with friends about Yangyang's story in the game—her uncompromising resilience in difficult times deeply moves me. This emotional resonance helped me immerse myself even deeper into her persona before the camera.
As for my caption, "In both smooth sailing and adversity, I hope to face everything by your side," that is precisely how Yangyang makes me feel. I hope my photos achieve more than visual accuracy, also conveying her sincerity and quiet determination. Cosplay is not merely replicating another's appearance; it is using one's own body as a medium to experience the possibilities of another life. For lighting, I opted for soft, comfortable lighting to create an even, clean complexion while highlighting the delicate sheen of the jacquard fabric. The thin cord and pendant around the neck are subtle design touches—unobtrusive, yet filling the open neckline nicely. Post-processing was kept light, mainly preserving the fabric's authentic texture and hair quality, using the glowing birds and feathers merely as atmospheric accents rather than overwhelming the subject.
Completing this set gave me a deeper appreciation of Yangyang. She isn't an overtly aggressive character, but one who imparts quiet strength through steadfast companionship. Given the chance, I'd love to try other characters from Wuthering Waves with different styles to take on new shooting challenges.
