[Yangyang cosplay] Wuthering Waves: Yangyang Xuanling, Longing to Walk by Your Side to Distant Horizons

The set for this shoot was constructed in an indoor studio brimming with classical elegance. The character I cosplayed is Yangyang from Wuthering Waves, wearing her Yangyang Xuanling outfit. When I first held the costume, the most striking impressions were the lustrous texture of the fabric and the exquisitely embroidered tribal motifs along the sleeves. To faithfully recreate her look, the wig was cut with straight blunt bangs and shoulder-length hair featuring a black-to-blue gradient; the vibrant blue at the hair ends and the cowlick (ahoge) on top are the soul of the look. Paired with a light blue choker and white feather accents on the shoulder, the entire ensemble gained wonderful layered depth in this Chinese-style cosplay.

Before shooting, while discussing the storyboard, we established an overarching tone: gentle yet filled with strength. As written in the post, 'How I long to venture to distant horizons with you,' and 'Whether in joy or sorrow, through triumph or trial, I wish to face it all beside you.' This is not only the character's promise to others, but also my guiding emotional subtext while performing. To convey this sentiment, we experimented with diverse compositions. For example, sitting atop the large drum at eye level, my gaze needed to project resolve and embrace; reclining beside the drum with a finger lightly touching my chin and eyes slightly lowered, on the other hand, brought a sense of comforting companionship and relaxed serenity.

The studio lighting was exceptionally generous. Warm amber side-backlighting filtered through shoji sliding screens and sheer gauze drapes, illuminating the subtle slate-blue jacquard patterns and gilded details of the garment, reminiscent of a delicate Japanese-style photoshoot. The red-and-white motif of the big drum and the blue-and-white carpet beneath provided striking color contrast. To complement the outfit's ethereal lightness, I chose not to wear shoes and went barefoot. This posed quite a challenge for seated poses—I had to maintain open, graceful body lines while managing the drape of the skirt to prevent wardrobe malfunctions, meaning every pose had to be held with core muscles firmly engaged.

In terms of makeup, to match the black-and-blue hair and light blue garments, I wore blue contact lenses. For eye makeup, I selected reddish-brown tones with a gentle wash of red blended at the outer corners to enhance a lively, translucent feel. For the lips, a high-saturation red created a stunning contrast against the cool hair color. We didn't use many complex props—a red parasol and the large drum behind me were all, which kept the visual focus centered squarely on the character.

It's worth mentioning that the photography this time was done entirely by myself! Setting up the tripod alone, calibrating camera parameters and flash strobes, then dashing over to the drum to pose—I ran back and forth countless times just to check framing and lighting. Self-shooting is undeniably exhausting, but the perk is having complete artistic control over the frame. If an extension felt stiff or an expression wasn't quite there, I could reset and shoot again immediately.

I love this state of not needing exaggerated expressions—simply sitting quietly and conveying a rich story through gaze and posture. Whether resting my chin in contemplative thought or giving a subtle wink toward the lens, every micro-expression sought to breathe life into this photo set. I sincerely hope this heartfelt desire to walk side by side shines through every frame of this Yangyang cosplay from Wuthering Waves!
