This time, I shot a set of Yato cosplay with a battle-damaged style. The use of light and shadow and the arrangement of the scene are full of atmosphere, so today I'd like to share the creative mindset behind this set of photos with you all.
When achieving 2D character recreation, the details are the most important part. This black traditional kimono top uses a crisp-textured fabric that perfectly matches Yato's sharp and efficient image in the anime. The wig was chosen with a layered purplish-red color, and the curve of the ends was adjusted multiple times to achieve a natural look. For the makeup, apart from wearing his iconic blue colored contacts, I specially used special effects materials on the cheeks and jawline to create a battle-damaged makeup cosplay look complete with dirt and blood stains, bringing it closer to his usual state of running around and fighting outdoors.
To add a sense of realism to the frame, I brought along this katana. The wrapped cord on the hilt feels great, and holding it gives a certain weightiness. In these two sets of photos, I chose different postures—unsheathing the blade in a defensive stance and bracing for an incoming strike—coordinating with the exertion in my hands to strive for a dynamic combat tension within a static image.
The photographer put a lot of effort into the lighting this time. Instead of using conventional white light, a large area of red and orange light sources streamed in from the side. This high-contrast lighting effect, combined with the black backdrop of the night, greatly enhanced the dramatic conflict of the image, perfectly matching the chilling, desolate aura inherent to Yato. The shooting environment was a wild field covered in withered grass, a desolation that beautifully echoes the character's journeying vibe.
This entire combination of costumes, props, makeup, and lighting design was all meant to bring a realistic, combat-driven character into reality. Although it was a bit chaotic during the shoot, the final presentation aligned nicely with my expectations, making it a highly interesting Japanese style cosplay experience.
