From finalizing the design of this black, white, and gold Japanese-style outfit to actually standing before the cameras at Firefly ACG Expo, it took quite a long period of planning and preparation. Today, I finally found the time to sort out the high-res Convention photos from this event. Seeing the great shots shared by fellow cosplayers and having proper camera gear support this time, the on-site lighting and overall texture turned out significantly better than standard casual snapshots.
The part I love most about this look is the color collision and material interplay between black, white, and gold. The silver-white blunt-bang wig, paired with the two small metallic deer horns on top and large black ribbon headbands on both sides, creates a visual presence that feels both dynamic and restrained. In terms of details, the crisp white multi-layered fabric at the neckline is bordered with gold metallic trim, beautifully accentuating and elongating the neck. The black mesh splicing across the chest contrasts cleanly with the solid black velvet foundation fabric, enriching the depth across the bust without feeling heavy or dull.
The sleeve design is undoubtedly the soul of the entire look—voluminous Japanese-style sleeves printed with traditional golden ocean wave patterns on the interior and hems. Because the fabric has a silky drape, the sleeves fall or spread out naturally whenever I pose. The glossy black patent leather sleeves along the forearms create a striking contrast in luster against the matte textures of the outfit, serving as another visual focal point I personally adore.
Scouting shooting spots during the Firefly 15th anniversary event was quite a technical challenge amidst dense crowds. To filter out background clutter, we deliberately opted for side-rim lighting angles to ensure the subject's silhouette popped cleanly. The seated photos on the floor were mainly composed to showcase the full silhouette of the skirt and outfit. Since the bottom piece consists of black tailored skorts, sitting down made it much easier to showcase the wide black patent leather belt around the waist. The amber-gold calabash bead charms hanging beneath the belt also added an eye-catching splash of warm accent to the black-and-white foundation.
For the legs, I styled it with a classic Black tights outfit. Many friends who viewed the preview photos asked about the reflective sheen of the stockings under natural light; as long as the base layers are smoothed out properly, working with the ambient light creates a wonderfully smooth texture. Pairing the skorts with a Black tights outfit naturally elongates the leg lines, which, combined with the high-waisted patent leather belt, does wonders for body proportions.
Toward the end of the shoot, we captured some dynamic standing snapshots. Rather than forcing rigid poses, simply drawing the sleeves out to the sides or raising an arm naturally to block the glare or adjust my hair felt much more authentic. These effortless, candid postures resonated far better with this hybrid style blending traditional Japanese aesthetics, tactical functional wear, and modern design. After all, the greatest charm of this outfit lies in its flowing elegance and sharp presence; over-posing would only make it look stiff.
As part of this year's convention journey, I'm thrilled to have captured these memories at the Firefly 15th anniversary event. Sorting and retouching these Convention photos was meticulous work, but seeing the black-and-gold textures brought to life under the convention lighting brought immense fulfillment. The camaraderie among fellow fans was wonderful as always, with many stopping by to ask about the costume details.
