[Tamamo no Mae cosplay] Jet Black Mage Garb in a Chilly Night's Retro Study

While shooting this Tamamo no Mae Jet Black Mage Garb set, the style of this Fate/Grand Order design kept replaying in my mind. As a cosplay enthusiast, I had always wanted to find a matching location for a look with such gothic elements. This retro study was an excellent choice—the moody, dark ambiance left immense headroom for post-color grading.

The most troublesome part of this outfit was putting it on. The deep blue-black velvet fabric had a fantastic drape, but the numerous golden buckle straps across the chest required extensive adjustment to ensure every strap hugged my figure snugly without wardrobe slips, only satisfying me once the waistline was sharply cinched. The white ruffles along the cuffs and skirt hem had built-in structure, flaring into a gorgeous silhouette when seated.

For the makeup, to reflect the otherworldly nature of the 2D character, I deliberately elongated the outer eye lines and paired them with golden contact lenses to give my gaze a penetrating, fox-like sharpness. The long pink wavy wig was the highlight of this look; the beast ears and mini black top hat were pinned directly to the wig, making me cautious about moving too abruptly and knocking into the adjacent candelabras during the shoot.

The shooting process truly tested posing techniques. To flatter the figure in this outfit, the photographer had me experiment with several poses before settling on a reclining posture against the sofa. This pose accentuated body curves and the waistline while showcasing the black thigh-highs in their entirety. Cool blue ambient lighting brushed against me, perfectly complementing the retro brass candelabra in the foreground and the gramophone in the background, making it feel as if I had truly stepped into a magical realm.

Because the overall setting was relatively dark, rigorous attention was paid to costume, makeup, and prop details. The texture of the black thigh-highs under cool lighting had to be managed against unwanted glare to prevent overexposure. Before each shutter click, I carefully smoothed out the stocking fabric and the layered tiers of the skirt's ruffles. In terms of character expression, I avoided exaggerated emotions, relying instead on a languid, sultry gaze to embody the enigmatic aura of the Jet Black Mage Garb.

With so many wig pieces and accessories, the preparation and shoot took about a full day. Among Tamamo no Mae's various forms in Fate/Grand Order, this Jet Black Mage Garb design is unmistakably distinctive. I personally prefer this style of shooting that doesn't rely on smiles, conveying character presence purely through lighting, shadow, and immersive atmosphere. The studio staging and prop placement were spot on—the bookshelf in the background and cool lighting complemented each other seamlessly, making for a truly dedicated shoot. I love this set because one can clearly appreciate how the lighting and wardrobe elevate each other, alongside the rich details of the stockings, gold accessories, and velvet texture in low light.
