I had always wanted to find a translucent outdoor location with a modern urban feel to restore this character's daily vibe. This time we chose an elevated light rail platform for our platform on-location photography. The bright glass skylight roof provided very soft and ample natural diffused light, eliminating the need to rely heavily on outdoor strobe lights to beautifully present the luster of the light purple wig and the light-transmitting nature of the gauze skirt hem. In terms of makeup, to fit the character's settings, the focus was placed on strengthening the eye contour while preserving a certain skin texture and translucency. Paired with custom elf ears, the edges naturally transitioned under the light without appearing too rigid.
For the clothing combination, this styling adopts a multi-layered design. The white ruffled lantern-sleeve shirt on the upper body forms a strong black-and-white contrast with the black vest, and the bow detail at the neckline nicely fills the blank space of the neck, centering the overall visual focus. The black and grey irregular skirt hem of the lower body has a strong sense of layering, and the leather corset paired with the straps and metal chains draping from the lower hem creates a natural dynamic sway as one walks, making the frame come alive. Of course, the heavy black high-heeled platform shoes and purple tights are also key points of the overall look, jointly constituting the overall dark tone and giving a visual balance that is composed yet weightless.
The thing that gave me the hardest time during this shoot was that custom purple bat umbrella prop. The canopy is quite large, and the design of the umbrella tip has quite a lot of weight. Ensuring that the umbrella can be fully opened on an open-air platform while maintaining a nice and balanced grip pose demands a certain level of core strength and arm control. Especially when shooting half-body close-ups, the tilt angle of the umbrella and the central axis of the body must reach a subtle balance to make the image look both natural and powerful. For full-body wide shot compositions, it required pulling a greater distance between the umbrella and the body to fully showcase the lines of the Gothic style outfit.
Photographer @Mubai and I had a very tacit cooperation this time. Shooting in a natural light environment is actually more challenging than indoor studio lighting because light changes rapidly. We completed this high-intensity shoot during the afternoon when the light was most even. The camera captured many naturally emotional moments, especially in the half-body close-up, where against the metallic framework of the platform, the character's expression and control over the prop were beautifully preserved. Bringing a 2D character into a station we pass by daily through platform on-location photography is a wonderful hybrid experience, which not only gives the character more life but also leaves us more room for on-site improvisation. Afterwards, we shot some natural walking captures at the end of the platform. When organizing in post-processing, we preserved the true colors and textures of the original photos with virtually no excessive filter modifications, hoping to share the state closest to the character's original setting for this Anime-style photography piece.
