Our couple photoshoot for Phoenix Seeks Phoenix is finally here! When it comes to Li Bai and Wang Zhaojun in Honor of Kings, the Phoenix Seeks Phoenix skin line is undoubtedly the ultimate holy grail in the hearts of countless players. To bring this ethereal yet battle-damaged atmosphere to life in reality, we dedicated tremendous effort to the costumes and props. For my Wang Zhaojun cosplay, the attire features a classical red-and-white gown design with thick, plush white fur collars around the neckline and shoulders, combined with intricate golden patterns and armored accents, giving the entire outfit immense physical weight. To prevent accessories from falling off or shifting out of place while walking, I discretely reinforced many joints with needle and thread during earlier fittings.
My partner's Li Bai cosplay featured full silver-white armor layered over a high-neck red undergarment. To capture a dynamic, billowing flow with his long white hair, it not only required meticulous setting, but also coordination with wind machines and manual hair tossing on set. My wig was likewise waist-length white hair crowned with an exquisite gold-and-white coronet; to prevent severe tangles during dynamic action, we spent half an hour combing it through before every take.
The outdoor temperature on the day of the shoot was actually quite high, but to complement the atmospheric effects of real flames and dense smoke, we had to stay as close as possible to the fire sources, enduring intense heat. To portray that destined bond of fighting side-by-side amidst raging warfare, we repeatedly adjusted our seated and kneeling stances on the ground. This tested both stamina and endurance to the limit. Portraying a wounded yet unyielding demeanor meant that even the slightest awkwardness in extending my legs could look stiff on camera. My gesture of reaching forward in the photo was meant to depict channeling a magical resonance, while holding the Phoenix Seeks Phoenix longsword plunged into the cracked stone slab with my other hand. The sword itself was quite heavy; supporting my body with it while maintaining an elegant posture demanded immense core strength.
The post-production fire and luminous aura effects were the centerpiece of this set. During the shoot, we essentially performed without physical targets across an open patch of ground. Beside us on set were dedicated crew members managing smoke and lighting. The smoke machine behind us continuously billowed atmosphere; heavy smoke easily caused coughing, yet we had to accurately locate the camera lens amidst the haze. Wearing heavy fur collars and armor, I deliberately held my neck and shoulders high and poised. After several sets of movements, I was drenched in sweat, requiring frequent makeup touch-ups.
What satisfied me most in the final cuts was how golden streams of light pierced through the smoke, cascading across the white hair and red-and-white hemline. To nail this Phoenix Seeks Phoenix shoot, my partner and I spent considerable time synchronizing our movements. From the grip and placement of our hands to the direction of our eye contact, repeated trial and error was required to project the most natural, fateful couple chemistry before the lens. Our outdoor location was set in an ancient courtyard featuring traditional wooden lattice windows; that desolate sense of ruin contrasted with the ornate grandeur of the costumes, matching the skins' lore flawlessly. We even calculated the precise window when sunlight cast through the wooden lattices to seize those fleeting minutes of optimal light and shadow. Being able to bring these beloved characters to life alongside my partner in such a challenging project was grueling, but seeing that intensely dramatic moment frozen in the frame fills me with immense pride as a cosplayer.
