[Arona & Plana Cosplay] The Azure Summer in the Zhoushan Sea Breeze

This Blue Archive Arona and Plana swimsuit cosplay shoot by the seaside in Zhoushan, from finalizing the theme to executing the project, was primarily driven by our desire to present a beautiful state of life unique to the 2D summer. The weather conditions on the day of the shoot were absolutely ideal; the sky was exceptionally clear, and the cloudless, clean blue backdrop played a crucial role in setting off this set of photos. Paired with the wooden swing and white metal frame already present at the scene, the geometric structure and purity of the entire frame were extremely high, allowing the photos to possess powerful visual tension without overly complex staging. We utilized the height of the swing and some simple high-and-low layering to make the frame appear more dynamic.

In terms of character costume preparation, the outfits of both characters this time had their own distinct visual characteristics. The light-blue-haired character I portrayed wore a sailor-collared sleeveless top pieced together with light blue and white, paired with a high-cut one-piece swimsuit. This design not only made the color of the upper body look refreshing, but the high-cut pattern also beautifully enhanced the body shape, elongating the overall proportions. The other white-haired character wore a black one-piece with a white bow tie; this classic black-and-white pairing created exceptionally clean color blocks under the intense sunlight. Large areas of solid color blocks easily yield excellent effects during shooting.

The coordination of stockings and thigh rings was also one of the highlights of this styling. Wearing white over-the-knee socks with a black thigh ring cinched around the thigh, paired with different hair colors and halos, formed a powerful color clash visually. When the sunshine hit from a side-backlight angle, that translucent feel would form a soft halo around the white stockings—this subtle texture is exactly the detail that a coser hopes to capture in front of the lens. To make the summer vacation theme more vivid, we specially prepared brightly colored watermelons as props. The red pulp served as a finishing touch to embellish the frame within the minimalist blue, white, and black background. The posture of holding the watermelon merged seamlessly with the surrounding natural scenery, carrying a strong slice-of-life atmosphere.

Specific to the execution of this shoot, we indeed encountered quite a few small challenges. Because it was an outdoor seaside environment, the local Zhoushan sea breeze was a massive test for the wigs. The lightweight wig strands could easily become messy in the wind. To prevent our line of sight from being blocked, we could only use specialized styling spray on the bangs portion to aid fixation, ensuring that the clarity of the styling could be maintained. Although the swing itself provided great posture space, keeping our centers of gravity synchronized as a duo while swaying on the swing required repeated breaking-in; we had to readjust the tilt of our body center of gravity with almost every swing to find a relatively balanced and beautiful posture.

Personally, I particularly favored the camera angle of sitting sideways on the swing this time. When the body naturally tilts and one hand gently grips the hemp rope, this pose not only naturally drives the lines from the waist and abdomen down to the legs, showcasing the silhouette of the costume, but also utilizes the perspective relationship of the wide-angle lens to fully display the long-line advantage of the legs wearing stockings. It looks visually relaxed while beautifully conveying the characters' temperament. Although the whole shooting process was exhausting, the atmospheric feel provided by the final photos done in natural scenery during this travel photography is far beyond what studio flashes can replace. We experimented with two different expressions: one naturally looking forward, and one raising a hand to harmonize with the sea breeze. Different perspectives gave the photos more vitality.

The blue and red halos possessed different refractive textures under the sun, and we paid special attention to their positions when arranging these gears, trying our best to keep them balanced on top of our heads without falling off easily. The interaction throughout the process was natural and relaxed; we didn't want to shoot this summer vacation like a tense action movie, but presented the characters in the most loose state. Ultimately, as the sun set, the shoot concluded successfully. This Zhoushan travel photography session gave us an excellent experience and gave me more insight into controlling outdoor natural light. This is a joy unique to cosplay—bringing the souls of anime characters into the real 3D world and leaving the most beautiful imprint between light and shadow.
