Today I'm sharing event photos straight from the Hongshan Zoo pop-up! The theme of this shoot was the Arknights x Hongshan Zoo collaboration project, Arknights - Bolívar Diagnosed, cosplaying Amiya. The venue had a very distinctive setting: vibrant yellow backdrops lined the entire site alongside lush green vines and foliage, crafting a lively yet mystique-laden jungle ambiance.
Shooting outdoors in this Amiya outfit may look straightforward, but it actually involves numerous subtle details. The cyan-green windbreaker jacket has a crisp, structured silhouette; to ensure I wouldn't look bulky while moving, I only wore a very thin base layer underneath. The magenta neckerchief is a signature element; to make it appear dimensional on camera, I tested various knotting styles, eventually choosing a slightly off-center knot so it wouldn't obstruct the collar line while infusing vibrant color into the composition. The orange backpack was genuinely packed with props and supplies—while carrying it around all day was exhausting, the authentic physical weight made my movements look much more grounded and natural. For the bunny-ear headband, several black bobby pins were criss-crossed securely into the wig cap mesh, keeping them firmly in place even during brisk pivots. The wig texture was lovely; the front bangs were lightly trimmed and thinned to frame my face, while the long side locks tended to tangle easily, so I carried detangling spray to smooth them out on the go.
Photographer @Wakaba was incredibly professional. Facing such intensely colorful, anime-styled exhibition booths, making the subject pop was quite a challenge. We decided to extensively utilize the chibi acrylic standees around the booths as foregrounds and backgrounds. In the first shot, I reached forward holding the long staff, with the camera angled slightly upward to give the staff an elongated leading line. Although the prop pole carried considerable weight and required engaging my core to keep it steady without shaking with one hand, I pushed through several takes for maximum visual tension. In subsequent hand-pose shots, wearing fingerless gloves limited finger mobility, so I deliberately stretched my finger joints beforehand to keep the gestures looking relaxed and fluid rather than stiff.
The venue lighting was intricate, mixing booth neons with overhead interior fixtures. To avoid a sallow cast on the face, we picked corners without harsh glare while using a reflector bounce to soften facial shadows. Because high-saturation backdrops easily absorb light, metering was especially vital, and the photographer calibrated settings with pinpoint precision. Post-processing avoided aggressive skin-smoothing, deliberately preserving authentic skin textures and details—because I've always believed the essence of cosplay photography lies in conveying genuine vitality, whereas chasing artificial perfection often loses emotional warmth. Shooting at the zoo surrounded by real animal motifs and visitors gave an organic liveliness that made it easier to immerse myself in the story of Arknights - Bolívar Diagnosed. We also navigated around peak crowds to keep passersby from distracting from the visual focus. Recreating Amiya in such a fresh, unconventional setting was an absolute joy, and I look forward to exploring more diverse styles next time.
