The convention photos from Firefly ACG Expo are finally out, and today I'm sharing how this look performed on-site along with shooting insights. The outfit design marries the graceful silhouette of a traditional Qipao with modern 2D cat-girl elements.
The wig for this styling is an ash-white bob with subtle cyan-blue streaks; the bangs rest precisely along the brow line, and the layered texture was hand-trimmed. The Cat ears are sizable, featuring deep navy bases framed by multi-layered white lace borders and finished with blue satin ribbons in back. To complement the cool tones up top, I chose large-diameter blue contact lenses. The eye makeup used a pink base that deepened toward the outer corners, paired with defined aegyo sal to make the eyes look round and bright. A slightly luminous pink lip rounded out an exquisite, dreamy finish.
The centerpiece is a deep navy velvet Qipao. The fabric offers wonderful hand-feel, but it carries noticeable weight and retains body heat; the hall's air conditioning was freezing early on before warming up, so moving through crowds proved physically demanding. The bodice is accented with black lace criss-cross straps, traditional gold frog closures, and dangling tassels for a regal touch. The skirt features a high slit, layered over fitted black safety shorts beneath. Across the legs are over-the-knee White stockings with delicate lace rims, paired with slender stilettos to elongate the silhouette cleanly. A plush white faux-fur shawl, black lace gloves, and a pure white feather fan completed the ensemble.
The expo grounds were bustling and visually busy. The photographer used wide apertures to dissolve background glass curtain walls and pedestrians, isolating the subject cleanly. For waist-up frames, I highlighted hand gestures with the fan and gloves. For full-body frames, posture was key: resting my weight onto one leg while extending the other forward with toes pointed maximized leg length. The fan was a versatile prop; adjusting its angle to partially veil features introduced delightful compositional depth. Ambient light remained soft without harsh downlight, rendering skin textures smoothly and evenly.
Attendance at Firefly ACG Expo was immense this year. Waiting in the entry queue was sweltering, but the hall's atmosphere made it worthwhile. Everyone wore distinct creative outfits, and I met several fellow fans for joint photos. Cosplay is always a stamina check—wearing high heels and heavy fabrics left my heels aching by day's end. Yet seeing the final convention photos brought genuine fulfillment. Navigating with the long skirt required steady caution to avoid stepping on the hem or snagging the delicate White stockings.
Overall, pairing a blue Qipao with Cat ears balances traditional poise with 2D whimsy. Though not portraying a specific canon heroine, the intricate styling and expressive nuance conveyed a distinct personality. This session offered great practice in framing discipline and natural camera interaction. The tassels and embroidery tangled easily, taking careful grooming post-event, while the white fur shawl picked up dust readily. Yet the high-contrast synergy between snowy white and deep navy on camera reaffirmed every bit of preparation. Carrying eye drops kept my eyes comfortable with the lenses, while the lightweight feather fan added fluid motion to still poses. Collaborating across varied angles with the photographer brought out the garment's elegance to the fullest.
