[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Spring Touhou Fanon: Faded Pink Miko Outfit and Bell Prop

Putting on this faded-style pink miko outfit, the golden bell prop in my hand instantly adds a touch of liveliness to the whole look. The reason for choosing this pink Touhou fanon design was to break away from the fixed impression of the original red-and-white shrine maiden outfit and try a softer, sweeter spring atmosphere. The wig was specifically chosen in a dark ash brown shade; combined with straight-across bangs and twin tails on the sides, it shows great texture under the light without looking overly heavy or flat. For makeup, I skipped heavy eyeliner and used a pink-orange blend matching the outfit's color scheme, paired with light-colored contact lenses for a soft lighting feel overall.

During outdoor shooting, we specifically picked a spot under a tree filled with blooming white flowers as the background, utilizing the soft light from natural diffuse reflection to make skin look fair and translucent. Two lenses of different focal lengths were used for this shoot; close-up shots like the first picture perfectly showcase the huge bow headpiece and the texture of the bell prop. When shooting Touhou Project characters like this, details are actually crucial—such as the white lace trim at the collar, flower decorations on the chest, and bows at the cuffs; every piece requires careful arrangement. For an outfit like this, fabric seams and stitching must be flat, otherwise close-ups will look cheap.

Though the shooting process was a bit tiring because the headpiece was huge and somewhat heavy, requiring hairpins to secure firmly so it wouldn't shift when turning my neck, the final visual truly fit the youthful pink vibe. I feel that taking cosplay beyond faithfully recreating the original work to blend in some Touhou fanon elements with the photographer's creativity gives the character a new sense of life—this is what we often refer to as the joy of Touhou creation. While keeping the character's soul intact, adding a personal layer of interpretation regarding her personality—for instance, the canon Reimu is more cool and decisive, whereas this pink faded style grants her a very relaxed and cute demeanor. I hope every set of Touhou character cosplays can explore different color combinations; these photos are perfect for spring vlog covers or image posts.

The synergy with the photographer was excellent this time. During candid captures, a gentle breeze blew hair strands from the ponytail at just the right moment, creating an extremely natural and vivid instant. That said, outdoor shoots definitely require precautions against bugs and pollen, but to capture a satisfying fan work like this, all the hard work is completely worth it. I plan to find a Japanese courtyard with a stronger shrine atmosphere next month to shoot another set. From a cosplay photography perspective, scene selection, lighting control, and guiding the model's emotional expression are all key factors determining the final presentation of a cosplay work. I personally favor authentic skin texture under natural light, so I try to avoid harsh flash fill lighting, preferring diffuse ambient light instead. This entire set was shot beside a blooming cherry blossom tree, where white petals and pink garments formed a lovely color resonance and layering, avoiding monotony. Wig care is also an art form—especially for styles with bangs and twin tails, the hair roots need volumizing in advance and the ponytail styling reinforced so wind won't easily mess it up during outdoor shoots. For makeup, widening the blush area helps soften facial contours for the camera, making features appear rounder and softer, which aligns closely with Touhou Project's 2D character designs. If you plan to cosplay similar Touhou characters, I strongly recommend preparing several lenses of different angles and focal lengths: close-ups showcase makeup and hair details, while mid-shots highlight the full outfit silhouette and overall posing with hand-held props. This is one of my recent favorite outdoor works; despite minor hiccups like strong winds blowing the bows around or uncooperative weather, the shoot was successfully wrapped up. As a veteran Touhou fan, every Touhou cosplay feels like an interdimensional conversation with these classic characters, and that immersive feeling is deeply enjoyable.
