[Denia Cosplay] Wuthering Waves Denia Pool Photoshoot: Achieving Translucent Radiance on an Overcast Day

This pool photoshoot was genuinely captured on an overcast day. People often assume overcast lighting is unfavorable—that the cool color temperature dulls tones and splashing water easily blurs—but this finished Denia Cosplay set proves that with the right technique, cloudy skies actually yield an exceptionally soft, translucent texture. For this shoot, the outfit was an original swimsuit concept for Denia from Wuthering Waves: a pink-and-white checkered one-piece layered beneath an off-the-shoulder white sheer cover-up. The wig was styled in a pink-purple gradient with subtle pale blue highlights. I was quite concerned about the synthetic fibers tangling once submerged, so I styled it into a half-updo beforehand and applied generous amounts of anti-frizz spray.

The greatest challenge of shooting in a pool on an overcast day is diffused light, which strips away sparkling surface ripples and leaves scenes looking flat and muted gray. To combat this, I had the photographer rely primarily on wide apertures, utilizing shallow depth of field to soften the background of blue mosaic tiles and pull the subject forward. Concurrently, I brought in clear pool floats and a pastel pink swim ring, leveraging vibrant prop colors to illuminate the frame. For posing, when reclining on the float, I extended my body fully—one leg gently bent and the other stretching out naturally to maximize leg length across the lens. While leaning against the pool edge, keeping an erect spine, resting my chin on one hand, and locking eyes with the camera allowed natural water reflections to fill light softly onto my face.

The water splashing sequence demanded the tightest synchronization. For expansive splashes, shutter speeds had to be fast. Kneeling in the shallow end, I engaged my arms to fling water outward to both sides while leaning my torso subtly back, preventing rogue droplets from splashing directly onto my face and smudging the makeup. Under continuous burst mode, once the water arc cleared shoulder height, we reliably captured dynamic, energetic frozen moments. Although maneuvering through water in swimwear creates drag and exhausts far more stamina than studio shoots, seeing crystalline water droplets suspended mid-air made it thoroughly worthwhile.

Many fellow cosplayers ask how to fix cloudy, dull water tones in post-processing: my routine involves reducing overall contrast, lifting shadows, cooling the white balance slightly to preserve the water's natural cyan-blue clarity, and pulling back orange saturation on the skin to maintain a luminous, porcelain translucency. Sun protection and smudge-proof prep are paramount for pool photography: always apply waterproof sunscreen before entering the water, keep the base makeup thin and dewy, choose waterproof cream formulas for color cosmetics, and keep blotting sheets and dry towels handy by the deck. From styling coordination to posing execution, this Wuthering Waves Denia pool session was immensely satisfying, and I look forward to exploring more creative underwater and poolside angles ahead.
