This time I shot this set of Chainsaw Man Reze cosplay photoshoot by the river. Actually, the preparation process for this look was quite interesting. The combination of a black-and-white sleeveless shirt and a bow tie, along with crisp purple short hair, aimed to remove the combat feel of the original work and find a quiet everyday rainy day or summer vibe similar to the manga. The day of the shoot was actually in midsummer, and the weather was sweltering, but the wind by the river was huge. Holding this bunch of small daisies, when the wind blew up, the strands of the wig happened to hit my face, closely matching the character's casual and slightly cool feel. When the wig was purchased, the bangs were relatively long, so I trimmed them myself, trying my best to fit the character's slightly messy yet sharp curvature. Making the styling took a lot of effort, but when the hair was blown into a natural volume by the river wind on-site, it was indeed highly eye-catching.
For the choice of clothing, I restored that kind of crisp short outfit as much as possible. Although the white shirt is breathable, the collar must be tightly buttoned for the look, and combined with the black bow tie and slim-fit high-waisted black shorts, it was actually a major test outdoors in midsummer. Under the hot temperature, maintaining a dry makeup look and a natural posture required constant adjustments. Fortunately, the medium-shot composition could beautifully avoid some cluttered edges and concentrate the visual focus on the character's expression and the hand-held flower bouquet. The overall visual is clearly black and white, which highly conforms to Reze's contrast of appearing to be just an ordinary working girl on the surface but actually having a completely different other side. The photographer was very good at catching details; although the background was the wire mesh and concrete revetment by the river, under a large aperture, it blurred into a cool-toned misty background, letting the frame focus on the primary subject during our riverside location shoot.
I personally love this feeling of shooting cool and detached characters in nature. No complex studio sets are needed; natural light is the best filter, especially that kind of diffused light hitting the face, preserving a translucent skin feel. During the shooting process, I also adjusted the holding posture of the flower bouquet several times; simply pinching the flower stem vs. cradling it with both hands presented completely different temperaments, and ultimately I selected this version of crossed hands, looking more relaxed. While shooting, I thought of those calm-before-the-storm segments in the manga; although the character is holding seemingly harmless small daisies, it is precisely this sense of contradiction within the quietness that is enchanting. As an ordinary coser who loves this work, being able to restore the Reze I understand through the lens is a highly joyful experience. In post-processing, I didn't deliberately strengthen the color saturation either; instead, I slightly lowered the background contrast, making the entire frame look more translucent and refreshing, carrying a touch of summer coolness. I hope this set of photos I presented can let everyone feel the character's gentle yet detached temperament on her other side. Being able to thoughtfully present a character one loves is an enjoyment in itself through this fine journey of Anime-style photography.
