This shoot features Seiga Kaku, the Gensokyo hermit from Touhou Project skilled in phasing through walls and guiding spirits. Because the post mentioned "a thousand years passed phasing through walls," when setting the tone for the shoot, we decided to create a sense of mystery and serene atmosphere that transcends time as much as possible.
Designing and customizing this outfit actually took a lot of thought. The primary color scheme combines light blue and teal, complemented by white lace splicing and layered sheer tulle to match her naturally cool and ethereal character setting. Metal accessories and hanging chains across the chest added texture, preventing the lightweight fabric from looking monotonous. The sleeves feature a wide water-sleeve style; the voluminous cuffs spread out naturally when lying down, generating great visual tension. The lower half was paired with white slouch socks wrapped with red cords at the ankles and adorned with a white talisman charm, serving as a finishing detail for the overall look.
To recreate the atmosphere of "a thousand years" of depth, location selection was meticulous. The practical set featured a dark, carved wooden reclining couch, where I was photographed lying on my back. Lifting my feet slightly toward the upper right corner of the frame broke conventional composition with a relaxed, slightly languid posture. The black long-rod prop in hand topped with a golden orb felt high-quality in hand; I rested it naturally beside my face, gazing directly into the lens. This top-down angle, combined with my slightly tilted-back head, showcased hairstyle and facial contours beautifully.
The photographer put immense effort into the lighting setup. Outside that large circular moon gate window you see, instead of ordinary daily fill light, striking deep blue ambient lighting was cast. This cool tone served as a background base, instantly pulling the frame's atmosphere to a serene, dreamlike level. Meanwhile, pink floral branches adorned the outside of the moon gate, appearing exceptionally soft under blue light illumination. This clash of cool and warm environmental lighting provided a crucial source of ethereal charm.
Regarding hairstyle and makeup, I discussed test runs with the stylist multiple times early on. The teal-blue wig required airy volume when trimming blunt bangs and sideburns without sticking to the scalp, ensuring it wouldn't look rigid when lying back. I also wore petal-shaped hair ornaments matching the outfit on my head, adding detail to the crown's curve. Because the pose was physically demanding during filming, my neck had to stay tense for long stretches; maintaining that gaze and angle genuinely required core strength.
In terms of facial expression, I refrained from exaggerated emotions, using a serene direct gaze to convey Seiga Kaku's detached, transcendent disposition. Though static overall, photography and scene design bestowed vitality from a fantasy realm upon the image. Transforming the physically impossible concept of "wall-phasing" into a mysterious artistic mood through light, shadow, and environment represents the true charm of Touhou Project cosplay photography. The blue-and-pink color palette and soft highlights in the final photo happened to align perfectly with that sense of desolate time-and-space overlap mentioned in the original text.
The entire shooting process was exhausting, but being able to freeze the character's ethereal demeanor on camera under these real set and lighting conditions left me deeply satisfied. Whether clothing details, prop textures, or dreamlike blue light and flower branches in the background, everything fused perfectly into a single picture. I'm truly grateful to the photographer for excellent mastery over light and shadow in capturing this set, and I hope this dreamlike, ethereal, serene texture resonates with everyone who loves this character in Touhou Project cosplay.
