The Parisian December night wind was biting cold, and to capture this nocturnal Persona 5 Royal series, I purposely paired the coat with only gray hosiery, shivering on the plaza before the Arc de Triomphe. Embodying our beloved kouhai, Yoshizawa Kasumi, her winter casual attire heavily tests garment tailoring. To achieve the best visual payoff in a night scene, I began preparing this plush-trimmed black coat half a month in advance. Cut in a cape silhouette, its double-breasted golden buttons yielded a gorgeous reflective sheen under the streetlights. The black plush cuffs looked warm but offered minimal insulation; however, to preserve aesthetic unity and fidelity, these details could not be compromised. I meticulously styled the reddish-brown wig, sculpting the blunt bangs and tiered ends strand by strand according to canon designs, with the large black ribbon bow serving as the visual anchor that needed to stand out prominently within such a monumental setting.
For makeup, I intensified the lip color to accentuate a translucent, cool-toned porcelain complexion paired with deeply structured brows and eyes. In complex outdoor lighting, flat makeup easily washes out under hard shadows, so contouring and highlighting had to be pushed further than everyday looks for the camera. The small black crossbody bag with its metallic chain served as a natural prop, anchoring hand placement so my arms wouldn't dangle awkwardly in the chilly wind. The Arc de Triomphe was bustling with tourists and streaming traffic. Night photography poses significant challenges in lighting complexity: the warm amber of streetlamps constantly fought the cool white background glow, demanding precise fill light to lift the subject from deep shadows. We waited for gaps in traffic; the blurred black car in the first photo was caught waiting at a red light, which organically injected kinetic urban grit into an otherwise static frame.
While titled 'spending Christmas in Paris with our kouhai,' this was truly an intimate personal journey of character immersion. Standing beside grand monumental arches and vintage lampposts bathed in festive illuminations, I felt both serene and slightly nervous. As an iconic Japanese title, Persona 5's visual aesthetic is fiercely avant-garde, and its red-and-black palette photographs strikingly against the night. Curious international tourists glanced over, with a few smiling and wishing us a Merry Christmas. Though surrounded by unfamiliar streets, the moment I put on the outfit, picked up the bag, and stepped before the lens, the character's signature aura coalesced. Over-the-shoulder glances required a touch of cool detachment, paired with a stance that felt effortless yet poised. Between takes, I bundled into the coat for warmth, only to instantly slip my hands back into the open or into my pockets the second the shutter began clicking.
We shifted across several camera positions throughout the evening. Framing classical landmarks steeped in centuries of history alongside a hyper-modern game character fostered a captivating visual dialogue. This shoot brought valuable lessons in night portraiture—from leveraging ambient urban glow to preserve textile nuance to sustaining natural facial composure in frigid temperatures. Commemorating my bond with the character through this distinct medium in a city steeped in romance and festive warmth made for an unforgettable Christmas. I look forward to bringing more beloved characters along to explore new landscapes, forever freezing these intersections of the 2D and 3D worlds in frame.
