The shooting task for the Guangzhou branch of Genryumon has finally landed. When I first scouted the location at the New Hall of Guangzhou Cultural Center and saw this massive wooden structure with upturned eaves and interlocking brackets, the first thought in my mind was that it was absolutely perfect for a Shanhaijing-style outdoor shoot. Later, because the venue closed, this plan was put on hold until its recent reopening, allowing me to finally get this Cosplay location shoot as desired.
During this shoot, we switched between two practical outfit combinations. The inner layer is that highly recognizable black-and-gold modified cheongsam; the indigo neckline accent brightens up the visual center of gravity of the entire upper body, and the waistline is beautifully cinched, which elongates the overall visual proportions. To match the outdoor sense of depth and the solemn cold environment, I layered a gray-black pinstriped long coat over it, whose hem creates a great dynamic effect when walking on the stairs. Blue gloves and a silver-gray briefcase are the core props of this look; holding it while stepping up the stairs, the character's all-controlling oppressive aura and capable air immediately manifest.
The makeup focused on the sharpness of the eye makeup and the cleanliness of the base makeup, paired with her original black short hair updo, attempting to restore that unique temperament woven of classical elegance and capability. The white streamlined hair accessory on top of the head underwent special center-of-gravity adjustments, so it could maintain basic stability even when encountering outdoor wind during the actual shoot, saving the trouble of frequent readjustment.
The natural light on the day of the shoot was diffuse, with thick clouds. This soft light is exceptionally friendly for expressing the texture of Chinese architectural photography style wooden structures. The photographer's camera placement was ingenious, using a wide-angle low-angle shot from below the stairs, utilizing the building's flying eaves and thick wooden pillars as a foreground frame to balance the layers of the character and the architecture beautifully. I am extremely satisfied with both the straight-ahead stair movement and the captured looking-back moment in the photos. Especially the moment of turning around with the briefcase in the corridor, the focus of my gaze was captured perfectly by the side lighting; this sense of presence is exactly the most charming part of a location shoot.
The fabric texture of the costume performed wonderfully under the diffuse reflection light; the contrast between the pinstripes and the black base color is moderate, without overshadowing the main subject. Among the shooting props, there was also a lake-blue butterfly. Holding such a small object for close-ups actually demands high physical stamina, as one must maintain finger grip and shoulder stability, since the slightest movement can easily cause it to tilt. However, the final photo result was indeed worth it; the blue of the butterfly in the close-up shot forms a clever color echo with the blue of the neckline.
The entire Cosplay location shoot lasted about three hours, filming from the main stairs to the second-floor corridor, constantly moving up and down the steps to adjust angles. Seeing the visual mismatch produced by the Ming-style gray tiles, wooden railings, and character styling in the final photos, I feel the time spent waiting for the venue to reopen was entirely worth it. The interwoven experience presented by integrating an anime character into real ancient buildings is precisely the greatest meaning of a location shoot. There is no need to deliberately design a story; the cold environmental light and the character's own capable aura naturally blend into a textured single image.
The New Hall of Guangzhou Cultural Center is truly a treasure shooting location, with a broad architectural volume and a well-arranged structure, where different camera positions can capture completely different depth-of-field effects. The only thing to remind friends who want to shoot there is to remember to make an online reservation in advance, as arriving at the venue without one usually leaves you with no slots.
