The biggest challenge when shooting this Yinlin styling was conveying her uniquely aloof yet technologically futuristic Cyberpunk style temperament. Because the anime convention was crowded, we deliberately chose a darker location with an industrial backdrop, better accentuating the character's intrinsic lighting effects. Styling the crimson hair was time-consuming, creating many layered textures at the ends, which, paired with tassel and red flower hair accessories, substantially boosted accuracy. For makeup, the focus was on the eyes, using subtly upturned yet relaxed brows and eyes to express the character's sense of detachment.
The texture of the costume was paramount; this custom-made black leather outfit was not only packed with details, but had substantial physical weight when worn. The halter-neck design easily dug into the shoulders during shooting, requiring constant adjustment, and securing the red straps and metal buckles on the body also took time. The suture-like markings on the thigh were specially painted; given the intricate patterns, the makeup artist put in considerable effort. A low-angle upward perspective was used during shooting; the wide-angle perspective distortion not only elongated leg lines, but also better displayed the dynamic motion of the crimson hair and floating ribbons, lending the character a commanding, imposing presence.
The purple-pink light ribbons on the props were a primary focus of the shoot. To present the mid-air floating effect, multiple light points were arranged on set to coordinate with the shoot. Arm postures needed repeated micro-adjustments during shooting to prevent visual discrepancies during post-production VFX compositing. The purple coils on the gloves were similarly achieved through post-processing effects combined with reflector boards. Hands are crucial for expressing character personality, requiring deliberate control over finger curvature to capture a natural yet sharp, fierce feel.
In post-processing, the focus lay in balancing light, shadow, and color tones. Because the environment featured cool-toned industrial lighting while the character had warm crimson hair and purple-pink light sources, a split-toning warm-and-cool contrast was applied. Skin texture was retouched to look translucent while preserving the reflective sheen of the leather, making the overall image richly layered without losing realism. With full-body or three-quarter framing, the character was kept centered without cropping; although shooting from a low angle was exhausting, it completely unleashed the visual tension in the frame.
The shooting process lasted about two hours. Due to the warm weather combined with heavy garments and props, it was physically taxing, with every pose involving constant retakes and adjustments. Nonetheless, striving for thorough Game character recreation down to every detail and collaborating with the photography team to achieve this interplay of light and shadow was a truly unique experience and a rewarding challenge for this Cosplay photography project.
