The core inspiration for this set of photos produced in collaboration with photographer @米三华（创作版） actually comes from that phrase in the post description—\"Light is the source of everything.\" Before shooting, we were thinking about how to utilize our existing photography lighting equipment, such as the mentioned Zhiyun CX100, to maximize the texture of light and shadow, rather than relying solely on complex post-processing to stack a tacky atmosphere. Many times, when in-camera photography lighting is on point, post-processing becomes effortless, which is a shooting approach I have always preferred.
For this look, I chose a modified short black-and-gold cheongsam. This black-base fabric is covered with golden floral embroidery, possessing an inherent eye-catching metallic luster that reflects brightly when lit, catching light exceptionally well in a dark tone atmosphere. To break the conventional impression of cheongsams being overly dignified and conservative, we intentionally practiced subtraction by pairing it with a black suspender stocking outfit to create visual extensions along body contours and leg lines, tilting the overall tone toward maturity and allure. The red cord pendant on my neck and the long pipe with tassels in my hand serve as finishing touches for this Cheongsam photoshoot. This pipe in particular, when positioned at specific light angles with a few simple poses, instantly adds a touch of laziness and mystery to the frame.
In terms of location, we selected a physical set filled with vintage charm, carrying a Broadway or casino vibe. Deep red velvet curtains, golden tassels overhead, plus the giant roulette gambling table in the foreground littered with colorful playing cards and chips enriched the visual elements, while placing higher demands on photography lighting. This time we relied primarily on the Zhiyun CX100 portable light source. Its high color rendering index created precise rim lighting on the subject. The photographer deliberately avoided traditional flat frontal lighting, creating sharp light-and-dark transitions that cast light spots directly onto my face, arms, and golden sequin details of the outfit.
Truthfully, shooting dark tone atmosphere indoor portraits like this truly tests one's mastery over \"light.\" The professional photography philosophy emphasized in the post—\"there will always be a beam of light; let there be light and there is light\"—is spot on. Achieving high-end quality and a mysterious vibe often isn't about making the whole scene blindingly bright, but precisely controlling the placement and color temperature of the main light source. When deploying light, we set the color temperature warmer, creating a wonderful color echo with the background red curtains and golden embroidery, delivering a warm-toned vintage cinematic texture.
Though the shooting process was demanding—requiring poses lying across the gambling table and half-kneeling compositions while constantly adjusting camera positions and body angles—the resulting effect truly surprised me. The scattered chips and banknotes on the roulette table, along with the metallic carved birdcage in the background, formed a powerful visual focal point and dramatic tension amidst the dim setting thanks to that spotlight beam.
Another point I'd like to share is the role of stocking outfit choices in this theme. Within such a dark tone atmosphere filled with light and shadow, black suspender stockings act as a fantastic highlight. They not only outline leg lines beautifully, but their light translucency under spotlights reflects a unique luster. Integrating black stockings into oriental vintage elements like the modified cheongsam creates a neutral, slightly contrasting visual collision, which was one of the core ideas behind this Original cosplay design.
I believe the boundaries of cosplay should inherently be broader, without needing to be confined to specific 2D anime characters. Original cosplay concepts created around clothing styles, set design, and light-and-shadow expression can equally convey independent emotions and storytelling. This set of photos didn't copy any existing franchise background, but was entirely created around the present atmosphere.
