For this Jeanne d'Arc (Alter) cosplay shoot, we planned in-depth details from the wardrobe to the set design. The costume features a classic black-and-red palette: the upper body has a black form-fitting cut embellished with red lace-up ribbons and bows, while the lower half is a tiered, voluminous puff skirt alternating in black and red. To support the skirt's silhouette, I wore several layers of petticoats underneath, requiring extra care when walking or sitting. The silver-white wig was styled with a bespoke design, adorned on both sides with red floral and ribbon accessories, along with headband-like accents to heighten character recognizability in this Gothic style.
In terms of makeup, to convey the fallen nature characteristic of Jeanne d'Arc (Alter), the eye makeup emphasized deep crimson eyeshadow, complemented by a rich, dark red lip. The indoor location was chosen for its classical theatrical atmosphere. Behind me hung deep red velvet curtains finished with gold tassels, saturating the overall color palette. I sat on a brown leather sofa carved with golden wooden motifs, exuding a heavy vintage texture. Beside it rested a vintage leather trunk, while the floor was decorated with white and yellow flowers intertwined with warm fairy lights, flanked on the right by a still-life oil painting. These props balanced the composition nicely, preventing the background from feeling empty in this Vintage photography setting.
Regarding posing and emotional expression, the hatred and intense passion tied to her character lore were the core sentiments I aimed to project through body language. Instead of exaggerated actions, I leaned back against the sofa with legs crossed, resting one hand lightly beside my cheek with my chin slightly raised and a touch of cold detachment in my eyes. This pose conveys the character's haughty arrogance while creating a stable triangular composition. Notably, pairing black Stockings with black heels in a dark-toned setting not only elongates leg lines but boosts visual intrigue. During shooting, the photographer cast warm directional sidelight across my facial contours and legs while leaving the background enveloped in shadow, cultivating magnificent dimension.
During the shoot, the trickiest aspect was balancing tension with relaxation. Because the costume is quite constricting—with long gloves and a voluminous puff skirt—larger movements easily distorted the garments, requiring continuous minor adjustments. Additionally, the sharp contrast of black, white, and red can easily blow out in the camera sensor, so we constantly verified lighting positions to preserve fabric textures and rich colors intact.
In preparation, selecting the black Stockings also required meticulous thought. To match the skirt length and the style of the leather shoes, I chose a sheer, evenly translucent thin pair that resisted harsh reflections under studio lights while maintaining sufficient durability for constant walking and seated adjustments. The heel height was carefully evaluated to ensure an upright, imposing posture without compromising balance while sitting.
Understanding a character cannot remain solely at the surface of costumes and props. The complexity of Jeanne d'Arc (Alter)—consumed by hatred and smoldering passion—must be expressed through subtle nuances: the tension in one's hands, where the gaze settles, and even the placement of center of gravity on the sofa. I deliberately scaled back sweeping movements, relying on stillness to convey an undercurrent of turbulent emotions. Though the finished frames look serene, finding the optimal lighting and angles took considerable time.
The entire shoot was deeply enjoyable, and the props and lighting arrangement offered tremendous support. Whether it was the vintage texture of the sofa or the black-and-red palette in the background, everything resonated seamlessly with the character.
