This time, I took on the cosplay of Flandre Scarlet, the second mistress of the Scarlet Devil Mansion from Touhou Project. I've always wanted to capture her paradoxical blend of childish innocence and lethal menace, so extensive thought went into the overall styling and atmosphere. For the wardrobe, I chose a pink-and-white Lolita dress adorned with cross motifs and lush ruffled trims, featuring exquisite lace detailing across the collar and cuffs. The wig was textured with distinct layers to achieve short golden-orange curls. To channel her inhuman presence, I wore light-toned contact lenses paired with reddish eye makeup, aiming to accentuate that subtly yandere, vacant yet alluring gaze. The lower half was styled with White stockings and dark Mary Jane shoes; this pairing retained a youthful girlish innocence while elongating the leg lines in full-body frames to add a touch of understated allure.
Props were paramount in capturing the character lore. The skull cradled in my arms was a focal centerpiece—the very anchor of death aesthetic in this shoot—featuring lifelike textures and paintwork. While shooting, hand placement couldn't look rigid; I held it naturally, as if cradling a cherished childhood plushie, creating a wondrous uncanny contrast. Crimson apples scattered across the floor invoked the metaphor of poison apples, appearing far more tempting and ominous bathed in the crimson ambient glow. Beside me, a black branch hung with luminescent gemstone pendants introduced a touch of dark fantasy; their translucent prism charms refracted dynamic colors under the red light, seizing visual attention.
The character of Flandre Scarlet inherently harbors a contradiction between catastrophic destructive power and childlike naivety. In my performance, mastering facial expressions and the intensity of the gaze was vital. In the first full-body seated pose, with legs stretched out and head bowed slightly looking into the lens, my eyes carried a hollow, innocent glaze; by contrast, the second medium close-up saw my upper body leaning forward in a clawing gesture, eyes turning predatory, lips parted slightly to unleash her unhinged madness. The perforated black heart-shaped prop in my hand was designed to invite mystery and interactive tension.
Lighting this set was a fascinating creative experiment. We utilized an extreme red light source almost throughout the shoot, enveloping both the background and specular highlights on the subject in saturated crimson. This monochromatic scheme stripped away redundant shadow nuances, yielding a surreal 2D aesthetic. However, it placed immense demands on camera white balance and post-production color grading—the slightest lapse could cause blown-out highlights or color banding. The floor reflections in photo 1 and the light catching on the White stockings were tricky to tune, requiring meticulous dodging and grading to ensure the image preserved premium textural depth.
In our creative discussions, the photographer and I agreed to abandon cluttered backdrops, relying on solid monochrome to let the styling and props command focus. Even with the dress's heavy layering, the crimson backdrop turned the white lace and stockings into crisp visual anchors. Sitting on the floor in an elaborate dress was admittedly cumbersome—micro-adjusting angles and smoothing out the skirt hem took substantial patience, yet achieving our desired frames made every second worthwhile. Looking at this series, I hope you can feel the dark, unbridled urge breaking through the second mistress's sweet facade.
