Taking advantage of the Mid-Autumn Festival season, I finally completed this Guofeng Hanfu moon-viewing Hanfu photoshoot. The theme was crystal clear from the start: centered entirely around the Mid-Autumn Festival's timeless blessing of 'a full moon and a blooming flower (symbolizing a blissful reunion and perfection)'. Both the set staging and styling leaned into classical Chinese aesthetics, striving to evoke a gentle, graceful elegance touched with celestial charm.
Touching upon the hair, makeup, and wardrobe first: to mirror the festive Mid-Autumn spirit, I selected a sheer Hanfu gown featuring a soft gradient from cream-white into warm orange-yellow. The flowing wide sleeves and lapels were embroidered with intricate botanical and floral motifs, cinched at the waist with green silk ribbons and strung pearl tassels. For hairstyling, blunt bangs framed the forehead beneath a sculpted high bun, crowned with a radiant golden hair tiara and yellow floral ornaments, with long white ribbon streamers cascading alongside glossy black hair down both sides. While exquisite visually, this coiffure required rigorous anchoring of the hair padding pieces to prevent shifts during dynamic takes. On makeup, the foundation prioritized a translucent, natural finish, with eyes delicately blended in soft peach-blossom tones and accentuated blush to evoke the gentle flush of a tipsy glow bathed in moonlight.
Set construction served as the centerpiece of this shoot. Inside the studio, we erected an artificial tree laden with crimson and amber maple leaves, backed by an enormous illuminated artificial moon. To heighten that cool, otherworldly celestial mist, we burned smoke cakes on set to generate atmospheric fog. Wooden lattice screen doors, windows, and a low platform couch formed the background architecture, grounding the composition in classical heritage. For props, we prepared two remarkably realistic reddish-brown mooncake replicas and a fluffy white plush rabbit. Because the mooncake props were rigid and carried noticeable physical weight, handling them required subtle wrist adjustments to look fluid and natural before the lens.
Throughout posing, the photographer and I collaborated closely on movement. In the first shot, I extended my hand offering the mooncake while leaning forward—a posture requiring arm stability to hold steady while infusing the gaze with lively, playful spark. In the second frame, I raised the mooncake overhead with a playful winking expression to tease out youthful vitality. The third frame moved to the low wooden daybed, cradling the mooncake against my cheek with eyes closed in a gentle smile, emphasizing serene, harmonious peace. To capture flattering angles, I kept my spine upright with chin slightly tucked, leveraging the dramatic drape of the wide sleeves to build rich visual depth. The plush rabbit proved tricky to steady upon the low table, ultimately requiring a clever positioning trick to keep it resting naturally.
Lighting utilized warm-toned side-backlights, which illuminated facial contours evenly while sculpting the tactile weave of the sheer gauze, forging a cinematic temperature contrast against the cool-toned artificial moon behind. The smoke diffusion scattered light beams into dreamy volumetric rays. During retouching, I specifically asked to retain natural skin texture and the intricate embroidery stitches without over-softening the skin, preserving true material richness. The greatest challenge when donning voluminous, wide-sleeved robes is sustaining fluid grace while controlling fabric fall—stiff movements easily resemble identification portraits. Thus, we continually captured micro-actions like floating sleeves, gentle turns, and lowered gazes to seize candid, breathing moments. Mid-Autumn is a celebration of reunion and romance; I hope this set conveys these heartfelt blessings to everyone.
