Today's marathon at the World Line Anime Convention thoroughly drained my physical stamina! Preparing the makeup, styling, and costume for Seiga Kaku demanded an immense amount of time and effort.
Starting with the wig: styling this blue hair was truly a labor of love and agony. Recreating the character's signature upright bunny-ear hair buns required extensive experimentation with sculpting spray and internal armature. These two towering hair horns not only needed rigid fixation but had to maintain their sharp arc throughout the entire day without drooping, so I embedded internal wire frames reinforced with copious amounts of heavy-hold hairspray. While visually striking, wearing it over hours exerted noticeable pressure on my scalp. For the color, I chose a muted, dusty light blue that wouldn't look overly neon under convention hall illumination, ensuring it harmonized naturally with the pastel garments.
Regarding makeup, today's cosmetics focused primarily on eye contouring. Because my natural eyelid crease is fairly subtle, I blended eyeshadow across a broad area to sculpt depth, paired with dense, voluminous upper and lower false eyelashes. The contact lenses were high-saturation sapphire blue, ensuring my gaze looked ethereal and enigmatic before the camera. Blush was applied generously beneath the lower eyelids and sweeping over the apples of the cheeks; paired with a glossy pink lip glaze, it brightened the porcelain complexion and amplified a cool, slightly yandere 2D aesthetic.
Moving on to the attire: the overall palette features pure white and powder blue, embellished with cascading lace frills, strung pearls, and fluid tassels. The intricate mandarin collar and pearl necklaces around the neck required immense caution when dressing and undressing to avoid snagging the strung beads or delicate lace netting. The billowing chiffon bell sleeves fluttered with weightless grace whenever I raised my arms for photos. The waist cincher was tailored exceptionally tight, which meant I barely dared to eat all day—true devotion to visual aesthetics comes at a real price!
For hand props, the floral staff was an undisputed showstopper: a matte black shaft crowned with pale blue and green artificial blooms and wrapped in draped pearl chains. In the other hand, I carried two paper talismans inscribed with black calligraphy over crimson paper to accentuate character lore. This red-and-black accent forged a sharp visual juxtaposition against the prevailing cool-toned palette; posing with props beside the cheek or across the chest enriched dimensional composition. Aligning with the staff, I explored profile turns, subtle chin tilts, and direct piercing stares to capture her elusive, wicked hermit demeanor.
Convention floors are notoriously challenging environments—chaotic ambient lighting and dense crowds make clean framing hard to find. I logged tens of thousands of steps navigating the venue with this massive staff. Because the fabric breathed poorly and the heavy wig trapped heat, I was drenched in sweat within a few hours. Reviewing the photo returns just now, despite the sheer exhaustion, the lighting and framing turned out wonderfully. Given the chance in the future, I'd love to explore varied indoor studio sets to showcase different dimensions of Seiga Kaku.
