A lot of thought went into the details of this Vampire Knight Yuki Cross cosplay costume. The red-and-black contrasting uniform, paired with the cold iron chains and birdcage props in the background, tangibly brings out the repressed dark side of the character's past.
Before the shoot, I had an extensive discussion with the photographer, and we agreed on a high-contrast red-and-black lighting scheme. The dim lighting falling upon the red velvet cloth, intertwined with winding rose branches and scattered skulls, created a dangerous yet mesmerizing atmosphere.
In terms of makeup and styling, I carefully trimmed the bangs of the reddish-brown short wig to ensure clear color layers under the studio lights. The red contact lenses, paired with extensively blended dark red eye makeup, gave the gaze a deeper and colder intensity. The custom-tailored white collar and black-and-red stripes are crisp and slim-fitting, while the red bowtie is made of high-quality satin fabric, matching the red piping along the skirt hem to create a stunning visual transition. The white embroidered lines and white cuffs looked exceptionally clean under the cold lighting, forming a sharp contrast with the darkness in the background.
To achieve a more striking visual impact, I specifically chose high-elasticity black thigh-high stockings paired with chunky platform Martin boots. This way, when extending my legs during poses, the tops of the stockings would not dig into the skin, smoothly preserving the leg silhouette and pairing flawlessly with the red velvet backdrop. During the shoot, to ensure the black stockings and boots blended seamlessly into the scene, I adjusted my kneeling pose to rest my center of gravity on my ankles, keeping the boots at their most flattering angle. As the black stockings brushed against the red cloth, they caught a subtle sheen, which the photographer captured dynamically on the fly.
I experimented with various poses throughout the shoot: leaning against a carved black chair to showcase clean leg lines; sitting in a corner hugging my knees to convey a sense of bound vulnerability; and curling up or standing upright inside the birdcage to push the sense of fate and inner struggle to the peak. Standing inside the massive black iron birdcage, I truly felt the suffocating oppression of a character imprisoned by a heavy destiny. The birdcage composition was planned in advance—it was just large enough for me to sit inside, with chains dangling outside to center the visual focus on the character. When I curled inside, the red skirt fanned out completely, evoking an intense sense of shattered beauty.
Between takes, I kept contemplating how to make my movements look more organic. Props like iron chains can easily look rigid if placed carelessly, so I let them drape naturally behind me or rested one across my arm. Combined with the red rose vines, this created a delicate interplay between hardness and softness. The red velvet laid across the floor was thick and heavy; stepping on it felt like treading on soft, velvety blood—this strong visual contrast was precisely the intention behind the set design.
The photographer's mastery of light and shadow was also exquisite. Cold white light illuminated the face, while red light served as shadow transitions at the edges of the background, highlighting the texture of the black stockings and leather boots. This gave the final images both classic Gothic splendor and modern visual tension. During retouching, emphasis was placed on the metallic texture of the chains and the color saturation of the red roses to finalize the overall tone.
As a cosplayer, I prefer conveying the character's soul through facial expressions and body language rather than merely replicating an outfit. Yuki's complexity lies in being both a student and a vampire; the fusion of red and black serves as a metaphor for her dual identity. In this shoot, I also incorporated my own interpretations—for example, in the fourth full-body shot, I deliberately held a cold, piercing gaze paired with a poised stance and leg lines to project the character's commanding presence. This set avoids excessive post-processing, preserving authentic skin texture, hair strands, and stocking texture to present a genuine portrayal. Every time I cosplay this character, I am captivated by her unique charm wandering between light and dark, and I strived through subtle nuances of gaze and posture to express her conflicted sense of detachment. The overall red-and-black Gothic styling and set design have fully brought her core traits to life.
