For this night shoot of the Zenless Zone Zero Delusion Angel trio, we deliberately picked an intersection outside a shopping mall.
Shooting outdoor night scenes really tests the crew. Lighting relied entirely on a small portable fill light we brought, which meant constantly adjusting our angles back and forth across the zebra crossing. The neon signs and traffic lights in the background carried a natural cyberpunk flair, creating a stark visual contrast against the characters' pink-toned outfits. Sunna's ensemble—a pink vest paired with blue denim shorts and pink high-top sneakers—radiated athletic vitality for this Sunna cosplay. Aria's look featured black shorts paired with white over-the-knee socks and red Mary Janes, accentuated by pink twin-tails and little horns, making her visually striking in this Aria cosplay. Nangong Yu's black-and-pink highlights paired with black-and-pink striped knee-high socks and platform shoes, with the halo prop atop her head being instantly recognizable under the night reflections for this Nangong Yu cosplay. Each person's sleeves, leg garters, chokers, and waist ribbon bows were meticulously adjusted for proper positioning.
We snapped plenty of frames on the crosswalk. Photos 1 and 2 capture our formal group poses; to keep our movements synchronized, the three of us counted beats to kick our legs in unison. Wearing shorts and varying lengths of socks, we had to remain constantly mindful of leg positioning before the lens to maximize an elongated look. Photo 3 featured just me and another girl, with poses designed to be much more interactive; the contrast between White tights cosplay and striped socks was truly captivating in the frame. The graphic prints and tailoring of these outfits are adorable, but capturing fabric textures in a night shoot demanded pinpoint precision from our lighting technician.
Photo 4 captured a candid moment between takes. Waiting for pedestrians to pass and genuinely exhausted from continuous posing, I squatted right down in the street, which was caught by the camera. The other two were still goofing off behind me; looking at this behind-the-scenes snapshot now feels so authentic and hilarious.
Styling and maintaining the wigs took serious effort as well. To keep bangs and tips fluffy and voluminous, we brought styling spray to the shoot; thankfully, the nighttime breeze didn't mess up our hair. Sunna's green wig showed great dimensional texture under the lights, and paired with glasses on her head, looked delightfully cheeky. Aria's pink twin-tails served as the centerpiece of her styling, bouncing with lively motion when walking. Nangong Yu's black-to-pink gradient hair ends, combined with the green halo prop atop her head, required specific angles on dark streets to prevent over-reflecting.
Looking back on this shoot, from confirming wig styling and coordinating socks to overcoming lighting and environmental constraints on the night street, every effort was made to elevate this set. With every outdoor location shoot, the most grueling part isn't the two hours of shooting, but the pre-production prep and post-processing retouching. While these three looks share a unified palette, each person's style and character traits are distinctly unique. When choreographing poses, we fully considered the distinct features of each costume: for example, the girl wearing White tights cosplay moved with softer grace, while the girl in striped socks struck broader, more dynamic poses, perfectly setting off the differences between the outfits.
Exhausting as the entire process was, seeing the chiaroscuro texture in the final pictures and the trio's seamless chemistry made every bit of preparation feel thoroughly worthwhile. I hope this nighttime street aesthetic offers a fresh visual experience and allows everyone to appreciate the unique charm of these character outfits under the night lights.
