For the second day of the Guangzhou Anime Convention, I chose Formidable from Azur Lane as the highlight of the day's shoot. I began preparing this Royal Navy maid outfit long ago, wanting every detail from wig to accessories to align as closely as possible with the character's temperament.
Starting with the wig: I specifically chose a long, straight, silver-grey leaning towards white wig with plenty of volume. The bangs were trimmed multiple times to achieve this thick, neatly curved fringe, which effectively flatters the face line visually. The large black-and-white two-tone lace bow headpiece is one of the standout features of the whole look—made of stiff material to retain its shape, with tiny lace cross accents along the edges adding considerable delicacy. To prevent the wig from getting messy at the convention hall, I added proper internal pinning and support.
For makeup, I opted for a fair and translucent base. On the eyes, red contact lenses were paramount, instantly imparting the character's signature look. For lip makeup, I selected a cherry-red lip glaze, applying it fully to reflect Formidable's slightly tsundere yet adorable expression. During shooting, to keep expressions natural, I slightly lowered the lower eyeliner to give the gaze a more innocent feel.
The main outfit is a classic black-and-white maid outfit cosplay. The top features a black low-cut, off-the-shoulder design that accentuates collarbone and shoulder lines. White lace trims are generously used along the neckline and cuffs, creating a striking black-and-white contrast. I wore a black lace choker, where a central cross pendant with red accents fell just below the collarbone, adding a touch of vintage flair. The arms feature separate long black sleevelets designed with bows and thin ribbons at the openings, paired with white lace trim at the wrists—layering diverse elements without looking cluttered.
At the waist is a wide white corset, and the skirt is packed with cascading layers of white lace ruffles, giving the costume substantial visual weight. Fortunately, the air conditioning at the convention venue and the indoor shooting area kept the experience comfortable, preserving my optimal condition throughout the shoot.
During this shoot at the Guangzhou Anime Convention, I communicated closely with the photographer to achieve the best visuals. Since we were shooting against a simple light grey backdrop, avoiding monotony meant relying heavily on body language and facial expressions. In the first photo, I tried a restrained gesture with my fingers lightly resting near my jawline; the second photo adopted a more relaxed stance, with my right hand naturally placed over my chest. This angle prevented exposure risks while nicely displaying the choker details and upper-body cut.
Beyond completing set photos, what I enjoy most at conventions is interacting with fellow fans. Though brief, this anime-style photography atmosphere allows one to step away from daily routines. In my interpretation, Formidable possesses an exterior cool that hides an affectionate, slightly tsundere charm. In expressions and poses, I strived to balance the poise of a warship maiden with the endearing sweetness of a young lady.
In post-processing, I chose to retain authentic skin texture with subtle softening for translucency, while boosting contrast and saturation to make the black-and-white contrast pop. The red eyes were subtly brightened with catchlights to draw attention. This minimalist indoor studio style truly tests the model's expressiveness, and the final results were very satisfying.
The shooting session wasn't very long, but it was highly efficient. The photographer had a fantastic sense of rhythm for candid captures, letting me comfortably immerse into character. As a dedicated Azur Lane player, bringing Formidable to life in reality was a very special journey.
At the convention, several fellow enthusiasts recognized the outfit and warmly greeted me for photos, allowing me to feel the community's deep love for the character. Cosplay is more than wearing a costume; it is an understanding and tribute to a character's spirit. A convention is the perfect stage to materialize this passion and share it with others. These photos capture that day's moments, recording a special bond between Formidable and me.
